A reflection for the beginning of Lent.
‘Now, now – it is the Lord who speaks
–come back to me with all your heart,
fasting, weeping, mourning.’
Let your hearts be broken, not your garments torn,
turn to the Lord your God again,
for he is all tenderness and compassion,
slow to anger, rich in graciousness,
and ready to relent. Joel 2:12-13
Taken from the reading at Mass on Ash Wednesday. It sets the scene for Lent. It creates in the heart a place for a journey to take place, a pilgrimage to be engaged in. Lent is that time to turn to the Lord again and be amazed at his tenderness and compassion. Why let our hearts be broken and not our garments torn? Because a broken heart is a sign of an active realisation of what we do to demonstrate our desire to repent, to be forgiven, to forgive and to love. Tearing garments is an empty gesture, one done for show, whereas the heart is the true place of conversion to the Lord. The heart is that place where the real love of Christ grows and is seen. My heart is broken when I turn from the Lord’s presence, when I think I can do everything on my own merits, when I abandon trusting in the Lord’s love. Joel says now is the time to turn again to the Lord, do not delay!
So Lent is a time to focus on God. To realise we are loved and to reflect upon what that means for us. I am loved into being, I am to show love in return for being loved first! How do I show that love during lent? Prayer, fasting, giving penance too. Prayer is communicating with God, deepening awareness of his abiding presence, acknowledging his role in my life for I am called to praise God, worship God, thank God, and walk with joy in the path he steers and guides me to. Fasting is concentrating the heart on the task of finding out how to love God in return for being loved first! Giving is the occupation of the heart saying in faith what can I do, rather than what can I get. Penance is a recognition that I do not always get it right and I need to kneel before the God of love and give an account of my stewardship.
May we have a fruitful lent, a productive and loving journey leading us to the pilgrimage of Holy Week and Easter.
