Zimbabwean Man Detained at South African Hospital Over R1,260 Medical Bill
A Zimbabwean man, Owen Sosa, is currently detained at Moses Kotane Hospital in South Africa over an unpaid medical bill of R20,000, approximately $1,260 USD. Owen was admitted to the hospital on January 30, 2026, for treatment, which has now been completed. However, his freedom has been restrained as the hospital alleges he owes this significant amount.
Owen questions the escalation of the bill to R20,000. He claims he was not informed about the increasing charges during his treatment. “I don’t understand how the bill grew so high,” he said. “The hospital should have told me about the costs as they increased.”
This situation raises concerns about patients’ rights and legal protections. According to South African laws and the constitution, hospitals have no right to detain any patient solely over unpaid medical fees. Owen should be released immediately, and the hospital is advised to pursue a civil case to recover the debt, rather than detaining a patient.
