EFF Exposes South African Home Affairs' Role in Perpetuating Crime and Xenophobia
During a recent NCOP plenary session, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) confronted Minister of Home Affairs Leon Schreiber about the department’s failures, which have led foreigners to engage in criminal activities. The EFF argued that Home Affairs’ inefficiencies and biases force foreigners to become illegal, perpetuating hate, stereotyping, and xenophobia among South Africans.
Many asylum seekers and refugees, once registered, are no longer legal due to the department’s difficulties in renewing permits or issuing refugee passports. The EFF highlighted Home Affairs’ failure to grant citizenship and permanent residence to many applicants, exacerbating xenophobia.
Corruption and inefficiencies within Home Affairs have led to foreigners remaining illegal, fueling hate and stereotyping. EFF MP Mcinga emphasized that bias in Home Affairs contributes to xenophobia and black-on-black violence, with the department favoring European asylum seekers over African ones.
Minister Schreiber acknowledged the department’s failures, admitting that it was “failing itself and the state.” The EFF’s stance is justified, as Home Affairs’ problems, biases, and inefficiencies contribute to stereotype, violence, and xenophobia against African immigrants.
