New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani backed the pending Delivery Protection Act, a City Council bill that would require large last-mile distribution and delivery companies (such as Amazon and FedEx) to directly employ delivery drivers rather than relying on independent third-party Delivery Service Partners (DSPs). The legislation does not officially ban free consumer shipping, though critics and Amazon-commissioned studies argue that forcing direct employment could dramatically increase operating costs and lead to higher fees or slower delivery speeds for customers. Amazon has warned that if the bill passes, it could pull out of its local contractor structure, potentially affecting over 5,000 subcontractor delivery drivers and threatening an additional 2,000 internal warehouse jobs across 15 facilities.
