9 Tips To Build the Job of Your Dreams After 50 (Yes, It’s Totally Possible!)

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Let me guess – you hit mid life, took a good long look at your life, and thought, “Wait a minute… is THIS what I want to be doing forever?” If so, friend, you’re in good company. I’m right there with you!

9 Tips To Build the Job of Your Dreams After 50 (Yes, It’s Totally Possible!)

After decades of hustling, raising kids (or fur babies or plants or businesses), and doing what we “should,” there’s a glorious moment of clarity that hits: I want to love my work. I want to feel excited about Monday mornings!

And let me tell you, you absolutely CAN build the job of your dreams after 50. I did it, and in this post, I’m sharing not only my story, but also practical steps (and juicy resources!) to help YOU finally focus and thrive!

1. Stop Waiting for Permission – It’s Your Life

Back in 2008, I started blogging. Not because anyone told me to or because I had some grand vision of becoming a digital guru, but because I had things to say. I was running a marketing business, working mostly with real estate agents and small service providers, and my blog was a way to help them get traffic online.

Guess what? Nobody handed me a permission slip to start. And nobody’s going to hand you one either. If you’re waiting for a sign to pursue what lights you up, THIS IS IT.

Go start the blog, the business, the art studio, the podcast. You have decades of wisdom, skills, and grit. You don’t need anyone else’s green light!

2. Take Stock of Your Skills (You’ve Got More Than You Think)

Sometimes we’re too close to our own genius to see it. You’ve been collecting valuable skills your whole life. Organizing chaos? Check. Talking to humans like a pro? Yup. Crafting, writing, teaching, techy stuff, intuitive insight – whatever it is, it matters!

I created this little gem to help with that part: What Are 3 Things You Like To Do? Finally Focus for Creative Entrepreneurs. It’ll help you get clear on what you’re GOOD at (and what you actually like doing).

3. Embrace the Life Curveballs (And Let Them Redirect You)

In 2013, our whole life shifted. My husband and I adopted three kids from foster care, and I went from full-time entrepreneur to full-time mom with a side of marketing. My business as I knew it had to change.

So I pivoted. I opened an Etsy shop selling vintage goodies and started blogging about Etsy marketing. Was it what I planned? Nope. Was it fulfilling and flexible and aligned with our new family life? Absolutely!

Curveballs can be course corrections. They’re not derailments – they’re redirections. The trick is to adapt instead of resist.

4. Start Something That Fits This Chapter of Life

Gone are the days of burning out for the badge of hustle. You get to choose a path that supports your energy, creativity, and peace of mind!

For me, that looked like setting up an Etsy shop and using the knowledge I already had to build something sustainable. What could that look like for you? A coaching business? A digital product shop? Freelancing part-time?

Start small. Do a “micro-test” to see what feels fun. One step in the right direction is better than spinning your wheels doing what you hate!

5. Blog What You’re Living (It’s Therapy AND Strategy)

Blogging is my trauma response, no joke. When my mother-in-law with dementia moved in with us in 2018, I started another blog about caregiving, crafts, and natural living. Writing helped me process, but it also helped me CONNECT.

Your story, your real life, is your most powerful marketing tool. Share your journey and you’ll naturally attract an audience who resonates with you and what you have to say!

6. Learn How to Monetize Traffic—Passive Income is Not a Myth

In 2019, I got accepted into Mediavine (an ad network), and I started making money just from people visiting my site. This was the beginning of the dream – income that doesn’t require constant hustling.

And I want that for you too. Monetizing a blog (ads, affiliate links, digital products, etc.) is 100% doable. It’s not get-rich-quick, but it IS get-paid-slow-and-steady.

Or you could start a Youtube Channel, Podcast, write books, functionally doing ANYTHING that you love can be monetized in this day and age!

7. Ask the Million-Dollar Question: “What Would You Do All Day?”

After working with nearly 1,000 business owners, I always ask the same thing: “If you could do just ONE thing all day, every day, what would it be?”

Their answers? Almost never aligned with what their business actually does.

It’s eye-opening. And it leads to a much better question: How do I build a business around what I love?

Grab this helpful tool to start sorting that out: 3 Squares Worksheet – Time Management Tips To Finally Focus. It helps you see where your time is going and where your joy is hiding!

8. Finally Focus: Get Clear on What You Love AND What Pays

The sweet spot is where your joy and income overlap. That’s what I help women entrepreneurs figure out in my little course: Finally Focus.

We take a look at your strengths, your preferences, your time, and the actual market. Because loving what you do is great, but loving what you do that also pays the bills? THAT is the dream job!

9. You’re Not Too Old and It’s Not Too Late

Let me say that louder for the ladies in the back: YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD. And it is NOT too late!

We are wiser now. More focused. And way less interested in BS. That’s a superpower.

Building the job of your dreams after 50 is not only possible, it might be the most fulfilling thing you ever do. Start small. Start scrappy. Just START.

You’ve got this!
