A couple got a shock after “plucking up the courage” to finally demolish a wall in their kitchen after nine years of living in their home so they could finally learn what lay behind it – and the “bizarre” findings left them stunned.
Many homeowners dream of unearthing hidden treasures in their properties, pulling up carpets to expose sought-after hardwood flooring, restoring poorly painted fireplaces to reveal materials like solid marble, or even knocking walls down and discovering secret rooms.
This proved true for one couple, who’ve been living in their Kent home for nine years. Lifestyle photographer Tom Gold and his wife Sam Goldbrom, a textile artist and founder of the brand Little Victory, own an art deco house in Broadstairs, which was originally constructed in 1929 by Ideal Home as an exhibition house.
The property is spacious, with an impressive white frontage and aluminium exterior windows, and features a “wealth of original features” from “curved walls and doorways” to “inset alcoves” and even “an XL odeon style fireplace”.
Recently, curiosity overcame Tom and Sam and they decided to break through a wall in a cupboard in their kitchen. What they revealed was captured on video
Captioning the clip, Tom wrote: “In the cupboard at the back of our kitchen, there’s a doorway that had obviously been bricked up and plastered over. After nine years of wondering what might be behind it, today we finally plucked up the courage to find out…”
In the footage, Sam can be seen directing a torchlight through the opening in the wall, which leads to a dark staircase. The footage then cuts to reveal the full scale of their find – a maze of corridors and rooms running beneath their property.
They learned the vast cellar had electricity and pipework, and numerous rooms were storing boxes of files, suitcases and more.
