A neuroscience startup has created a 6-pound smartphone case that is so heavy and cumbersome to use that it should limit most people’s screentime by around half.
Smartphone cases are usually light and slick by design, but Matter Neuroscience decided to go the opposite way, creating perhaps the heaviest and chunkiest phone case money can buy. There was a purpose to their madness, however, as they were trying their best to create the most inconvenient smartphone case in order to make the handheld as difficult to use as possible. The stainless steel phone case weighs a whopping 6 pounds (2.7 kg), heavier than a 16-inch MacBook Pro laptop, and consists of two separate pieces that screw together around the phone.
Inspired by the iconic Black Diamond phone of the 1980s, the stainless steel smartphone case doesn’t fit in your pocket and becomes incredibly hard to use the more you check your phone. It’s this physical fatigue that naturally reminds the user to put the phone down. Unless you’re a gym nut and start using it as a barbell, that is.
“At 6 pounds, your hands and arms physically get tired while using it. That fatigue reminds you to put the phone down. It’s a physical feedback loop against overuse, and it will tone your muscles,” the phone case’s Kickstarter page reads.
Although taking the heavy phone case off your phone is not impossible, you need an Allen wrench to detach the two metal pieces, which is annoying and time-consuming enough to convince you against it.
The 6-pound smartphone case is currently in the crowdfunding stage on Kickstarter, and you can pre-order one for no less than $210. It’s a hefty price, but if you’re serious about fighting your smartphone addiction, you can opt for the brass version, which is heavier and costs a hefty $500.
Matter Neuroscience hopes to reach its $75,000 crowdfunding goal, but, at the time of this writing, it has managed to raise just $17,000.
