Breaking: Iran Captures Most Classified Unmanned Submarine (Video)

While Iranian state media claims they intercepted one of the U.S. military’s “most modern, intelligent, and unmanned submarines”, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) has pushed back against the narrative that highly classified tech was compromised. CENTCOM spokesman Captain Tim Hawkins stated that the underwater drone was an older, defective model that malfunctioned more than a day prior and carried no sensitive data or classified radar and sonar equipment. The incident highlights the conflicting narratives between Tehran and Washington amidst a broader maritime conflict.
Footage and images released by Iranian state media identified the seized vessel as a Dive-LD, a large autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) manufactured by California-based defense firm Anduril Industries. The submersible measures roughly 19 feet (5.8 meters) long and weighs close to three metric tons. According to manufacturer specifications, the Dive-LD can dive to extreme depths of up to 6,000 meters (19,700 feet) and operate autonomously for up to 10 days. Individual units are valued at approximately $2.5 million. The U.S. Navy officially began taking deliveries of the model for its Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Squadron 1 in April 2025.
This drone seizure is part of a sharp escalation in the regional conflict. Following the incident, the IRGC launched retaliatory ballistic missiles toward American military bases in the Middle East, citing a previous U.S. attack on Iranian oil tankers near Kharg Island. Concurrently, Iran issued urgent warnings ordering commercial tanker crews docked in Bahrain and Kuwait to immediately evacuate ahead of threatened strikes.
