Trump Gets Iran Deal as U.S. Missile Stockpiles Run Dry - Colonel Mark Cancian (Video)

In this 5 August 2026 published video, host Brandon J. Weichert talks with Colonel Mark Cancian about President Donald Trump’s diplomatic pivot toward a deal with Iran is heavily influenced by critical depletions in U.S. missile and air-defense stockpiles. According to assessments co-authored by retired Marine Corps Colonel Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), months of intense hostilities have forced the military to ration defense interceptors, prompting a shift away from military escalation in favor of a negotiated settlement.

The scale of the conflict has rapidly drawn down advanced weapons systems that are crucial for both regional security and global deterrence. The U.S. has burned through nearly 50 percent to 67 percent of its available Patriot Interceptors inventory, deploying over 1,100 to 1,200 missiles to stop incoming strikes. Over 50 percent of these vital ballistic THAAD Interceptor missiles defense systems have been expended, straining defensive envelopes. Stockpiles of the Tomahawk Cruise Missiles offensive, long-range weapons have dropped by roughly 30 percent to 50 percent, with at least 850 fired. Operations have effectively exhausted the global supply of ATACMS and Precision Strike Missiles.

The rapid depletion of these high-end assets creates unprecedented strategic vulnerabilities for the United States. Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine warned that dwindling interceptors are forcing commanders to prioritize targets, sometimes leaving unpopulated or non-critical zones unprotected to save ammo. U.S. forces may be forced to scale back defensively, launching fewer interceptors per target and increasing the risk of incoming strikes getting through. Mark Cancian notes that while the U.S. has enough to sustain a fight against Iran, using up half of its advanced inventory opens a critical “window of vulnerability” in the Western Pacific should a conflict erupt with China.

Replacing these assets is a complex, long-term challenge due to a domestic industrial base optimized for peacetime rather than a massive war of attrition. Rebuilding the missile supply to pre-war baselines is expected to take anywhere from one to five years depending on the specific platform. single advanced missile can take up to four or five years to manufacture from the time its budget is approved. Individual Patriot interceptors cost roughly $3.9 million each, while Tomahawks stand at $2.6 million per unit. Though the Trump administration and Congress have allocated billions—including over $25 billion for munition procurement—the physical arrival of these weapons to field units will face a multi-year lag.
