Cubans Launch Island Take Over as President Trump Flattens the Communists (Video)

President Trump is escalating pressure on Cuba’s communist government through a punishing energy blockade and federal indictments, while citizens and exiles on the island and in Miami demand democratic transition. The U.S. Justice Department indicted former Cuban President Raúl Castro on murder charges tied to the 1996 downing of two civilian planes operated by Brothers to the Rescue. The Trump administration is treating these figures similarly to the ouster of Venezuelan leadership, raising the risk of military action. 

 U.S. sanctions and a blockade on Venezuelan oil have left Cuba without fuel, causing devastating nationwide blackouts and food shortages. While thousands gathered in pro-government rallies outside the U.S. Embassy in Havana to protest the Castro indictment, Cuban citizens continue to suffer under daily blackouts and crumbling living conditions, increasing internal unrest. Facing economic collapse, the Cuban government has engaged in tense negotiations with the Trump administration, releasing over 2,000 prisoners in recent amnesty programs. The U.S. has offered aid in exchange for economic and political reforms. 

Driven by extreme fuel, food, and medicine shortages, rare and aggressive public riots have erupted across the island, with demonstrators even setting fire to a Communist Party headquarters building. In response to a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier being stationed off its coast, the Cuban government has told its citizens to prepare for war and is heavily relying on emergency aid shipments—such as rice from China—to stave off total starvation. 

Despite the dramatic rhetoric, U.S. officials state that a full-scale ground invasion is not yet underway. Instead, the U.S. is utilizing economic warfare and back-channel negotiations to demand that the communist government release political prisoners, dismantle its centralized economy, and accept a transition framework.
