Rally in Decatur, Georgia at the Office of the Dekalb County District Attorney Justice for Jayvis Benjamin

Dekalb County, Georgia (MMD Newswire) December 3, 2015 — Halscott Megaro, P.A announces today that it will be holding a peaceful demonstration in Decatur, Georgia on December 15, 2015 @ 12:00 noon in front of the Dekalb County District Attorney’s Office, 556 North McDonough Street, Decatur, Georgia 30030. This peaceful demonstration will petition the District Attorney to bring criminal charges against the Avondale Estates Police Officer who shot and killed an unarmed man.

On January 18, 2013, twenty-year old unarmed college student Jayvis Benjamin was shot and killed by Sergeant Lynn Thomas of the Avondale Estates Police Department.

In May, 2015 the Dekalb County District Attorney presented the case, along with 5 other cases of police shootings, to a civil grand jury. The civil grand jury recommended that only the case involving Jayvis Benjamin be presented to a criminal grand jury for charges to be brought against the officer for this unjustified killing.

The Dekalb County District Attorney promised to present the case to a criminal grand jury in May or June of 2015. He has yet to fulfill that promise. As of today, no case has been presented to any grand jury, and no charges have been brought against Sgt. Thomas for this unjustified killing of an innocent young man.

The family of Jayvis Benjamin, who is survived by his mother, his brother, and sister, asks the Dekalb County District Attorney to follow the recommendations of the civil grand jury, present the case to a criminal grand jury, and charge the police officer with the unjustified and unnecessary killing of an unarmed young man.
