The “Mamdani” in the headline refers to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. He and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been engaged in a fierce public feud.
During his mayoral campaign and leading up to the September 2026 UN General Assembly, Mamdani repeatedly called Netanyahu a “war criminal” and initially explored whether the NYPD could execute an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant against him. He later acknowledged the city lacked the legal authority to do so. The sensationalized mention of a “mob tunneling under his hotel” stems from actual security concerns and a specific infrastructure incident during UN week. The NYPD actually arrested individuals for trespassing inside the NYC sewer system near the UN meetings. Security teams detected suspicious movements near the hotel where Netanyahu’s delegation was staying, leading to a heightened state of alert regarding manholes and underground access points around Midtown Manhattan. Outside the UN and Netanyahu’s hotel, massive demonstrations took place, resulting in more than 100 arrests by the NYPD, though there was no literal mob “tunneling” to attack anyone.
