Forge de Laguiole will exhibit at the 3rd edition of Best of France in New York

September 21, 2015 (MMD Newswire) — Forge de Laguiole will exhibit at the 3rd edition of Best of France in New York. The event will take place in one of the most visited place in the world between Times Square and Broadway… the heart of Manhattan. On this occasion, you will be able to meet one of Europe best cutler Mr. Stéphane Rambaud who will hand chiselled his collector’s knives on the booth during the event!

To celebrate this unique occasion and as a tribute to the US flag and mythic eagle’s head, the famous manufacturer located in Laguiole decided to forge an exclusive tricolour knife: the “Best of France America”.

This unique model was created by Stéphane Rambaud*, who will be demonstrating his artistic know-how during the 2-day event. This “Best of France America” is a folding knife that has a 12 cm handle and feature a stainless forged blade. The handle represents the 3 colours that unit our 2 countries (blue, white & red), the spring is hand chiselled and decorated with 13 stars (as a tribute to the 13 stars of the 1st American flag in 1776). For this very special occasion, the usual bee is sculpted as an eagle’s head of course!

Born in 1968, Stéphane Rambaud’s initial training took place at the Cutlery School of Nogent from which he graduated in 1987 with the Apprentice’s Gold Medal.

SOME HISTORY…

Almost 200 years ago, the small LAGUIOLE village located on the Aubrac plateau (South western France) gave birth to the most famous French knife: the Laguiole knife.

The special look of the Laguiole knives is due to the so recognizable shape of its blade and its curved handle that perfectly fits the palm of the hand. Its mechanism is studied to fold the knife softly. First created 200 years ago for the local farmers, the knife acquired a spike and a corkscrew and soon became the favourite tool of the Parisian bar and restaurant owners… (Most of the best Brasseries in Paris such as Hotel Costes for instance belong to people originating from the Laguiole area…). During the rural exodus the small knife was like their passport when they left the Laguiole countryside. It is still today a symbol, a link to the territory and history.

Thanks to its elegant lines and perfect cutting edge, the Forge de Laguiole knife is today well known and appreciated all over the world. This cult objet combines utility and pleasure when it comes to share a meal with friends or when you want to open a wine bottle… more than a knife, it is overall the symbol of the French Art de Vivre. We also call it the “peace knife”. It is a perfect gift that symbolizes respect and friendship.

FORGE DE LAGUIOLE opened its doors in the village of Laguiole in 1987. It was the culmination of a project dreamt up by passionate visionaries dedicated to reintroducing the manufacture of the famous knife in the village of its birth: LAGUIOLE.

From then on, all the steps of the manufacturing of the knife were done on site, in the village. It is the rebirth of the Laguiole knife in its birthplace. Today, the manufacture employs more than 100 people this small village of around 1000 inhabitants.

The design of the workshops was entrusted to Philippe STARCK who perfectly interpreted the philosophy of the brand: to combine creativity and design. With its glass and aluminium design (and a 60-foot-high gleaming blade soaring into the sky), the building symbolizes the activity and dynamism of the brand.

First a local and everyday tool, the Laguiole knife became a cult object, a design reference, a symbol of the French Art de Vivre, and of the French gastronomy (added to the UNESCO’s intangible world heritage list)

In 2007, FORGE DE LAGUIOLE was awarded « Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant » (Living Heritage Company) for its commitment with living heritage. This label has been created to help French companies who are innovating, improving their markets and reinforcing their growth thanks to the official recognition of their expertise.

LAGUIOLE IS NOT A BRAND OF CUTLERY!

Laguiole is a 11th Century French village. It is also, where the Laguiole knife was born 200 years ago and where Forge de Laguiole is still making knives respecting the ancestral cutlery know how.

Creating a Forge de Laguiole knife means several hours or even days of work. No less than 40 steps are necessary to achieve only one item. The quality of its finish, the strength of the forged blade and its spring, the thickness of its bolsters and plates, as well as the accuracy of its calibration are the elements that contribute to its lifespan. Forge de Laguiole integrates all these manufacturing steps in the Laguiole village (visits and free tours of the factory are possible all year long).

The design and the features of the knife must respect the general profile established during the nineteenth century by the original Laguiole cutlers but this spirit still inspires the creations of our many designers.

Continuity or modernity, FORGE DE LAGUIOLE is inspiring talents on and on… Philippe Starck, Andrée Putman, Ora-Ito, Jean-Michel Wilmotte, Hilton McConnico, Christian Ghion, Matali Crasset, Sonia Rykiel, Olivier Gagnère, Yan Pennor’s… they all reinterpreted the lines of the knife for Forge de Laguiole.
