Parents File Lawsuit Against High School Volleyball Coaches For Assault And Battery Of Players

Bountiful, Utah (MMD Newswire) September 8, 2015 — Clair and Jill Asay of Bountiful, Utah, have filed an assault and battery lawsuit in the Utah Second District Court in Bountiful, for the assault and battery committed upon their daughters, both players, and both minors, at Bountiful High School, by Head Volleyball Coach Lane Herrick.

Mr. Herrick of Bountiful was terminated from his position as head baseball coach at Carbon High School in 2007 for conduct that was termed “mentally abusive towards his players.” Despite being terminated by Carbon High School, he was hired by Bountiful High School to coach its Women’s Volleyball Team.

While at Bountiful High School, Mr. Herrick’s pattern of mental and physical abuse of student athletes continued. He once lined his baseball team and shot baseballs from the pitching machine at the players so that they could learn how to “take one for the team.” Several parents and faculty from Davis School District have made several oral and written complaints about him over the course of several years. For example, one fellow volleyball coach complained back in 2013 that Mr. Herrick has been mentally and verbally abusive to several players. Davis School District also has shown a history of lack of institutional control over Bountiful High School coaches, including an incident where a coach participated in the hazing of an athlete that led to a sexual assault of the athlete.
