June 17, 2015 (MMD Newswire) — The American Bar Association (ABA) Tort Trial & Insurance Practice Section (TIPS) & Southeastern Admiralty Law Institute (SEALI) has named John C. Scarborough, Jr., a litigator Chartwell’s Miami office, the winner of its Young Lawyers Writing Competition.

This competition solicited papers from members of the ABA’s young lawyers division on a contentious maritime law topic. John’s article about the “Saving to Suitors” clause, which preserves the rights of state courts to adjudicate maritime cases, documents its impact on the practice of maritime law, the contemporaneous disputes regarding the removability of maritime cases to federal courts, the right to a jury trial in maritime cases, and the” “choice of law” conundrum in maritime cases.

John earned a degree in history from Duke University, where he skippered for the Duke Sailing Team and spent his summers working aboard tugboats in the Gulf of Mexico. He graduated from Tulane University Law School with a Certificate in Maritime Law. John has worked aboard large yachts worldwide as a bosun and officer of the watch and as a regulatory consultant for the towing industry. He is a fully licensed Yacht Captain with numerous ocean crossings and years of experience at sea.

John will present his article at the upcoming SEALI meeting in Point Clear, Alabama on June 26-27, 2015. The ABA will also publish the article in an upcoming newsletter.

Chartwell Law litigates maritime & admiralty matters and defends marine products liability cases from Boston to Key West. Chartwell currently has four offices in Florida, and will add three additional Florida offices in June to serve the entire state of Florida. Chartwell also has offices in New York, Boston, New Jersey and throughout Pennsylvania.
