Air Travel Proves Vastly Safer Than Driving, According to New Study

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

A new analysis by Scott Vicknair lays bare the staggering safety gap between flying and driving in the United States. Despite public perception often favoring car travel as more familiar or controllable, long-term data shows that airplanes remain the overwhelmingly safer choice.

Between 2002 and 2022, the fatality rate for commercial air travel registered at just 0.003 deaths per 100 million miles. Serious injuries averaged 33 annually, with fewer than 800 passenger deaths in the entire 20-year span. Most fatalities stemmed from small on-demand air taxis, not large scheduled flights.

The contrast on America’s highways is stark. More than 48 million injuries and over half a million deaths occurred in passenger vehicle accidents during the same period. In 2022 alone, road travel saw a fatality rate of 0.57 deaths per 100 million miles—nearly 190 times that of flying.

Motorcycles represent an even greater danger. Riders experienced a fatality rate of 25.5 per 100 million miles in 2022, making motorcycle travel more than 8,500 times deadlier than flying. While public transit offers relatively safer ground options, buses still accounted for 89 percent of transit-related injuries and over a third of deaths in 2023.

Despite aviation’s strong safety record, plane crashes tend to dominate headlines. This skewed coverage magnifies public fear, even though more than 100 people die on U.S. roads each day without national recognition. The larger passenger totals per flight explain this imbalance in media visibility.

Scott Vicknair’s report also highlights the economic costs of road accidents. With annual estimates nearing $871 billion, driving’s financial burden includes medical care, lost productivity, legal fees, and property damage.

The data makes the case clear. For safety and financial stability, flying remains a far smarter choice than driving, particularly on long-distance trips.
