Throwing down the gauntlet

Do you happen to remember Robert Reich?

In one of his latest screeds, he claims that The Donald has “relinquished the presidency.” Curiousity piqued by this bold claim, wondering if I’d missed something over the weekend, we found a list of ten reasons that we should “stop recognizing him as president.” What we found was a rehash of claims made again and again by the media, a whole slew of rabidly anti-Trump Democrats (and a few GOP types), and a lot of chestbeating on the part of the physically diminutive Mr. Reich. (We note that The Donald, at least, has the physical body to actually support such a stupendous ego. Mr. Reich seemingly possesses miraculous powers – or maybe he is a buddy with Charles Xavier.)

But the point is, Mr. Reich is clearly writing with a laser-like focus on those who have long been viciously opposed to Donald J Trump breathing a single second longer. None of this is in the least convincing to any person who even “moderately” supports The Donald. Who thinks he might have done a few good things now and then, and is doing some now.

But we also cannot help but note that virtually every one of the US Presidents in the last century (from 1925 to now) committed very much the same acts that Trump is condemned by Reich (and his compatriots) in this and other writings. Both Democrat and Republican. And many will argue we could go back even further, past Lincoln and all the way back to Andrew Jackson, and find pretty much the same things. Perhaps to a lesser degree but of the same kind. We believe that, by God’s law and moral standards, and if a truly objective and honest application of the US Constitution were used as a yardstick, that The Donald would be condemned to the most awful sort of punishment for the crimes he has committed. He and every other US President. (Yes, even Warren G. Harding and Calvin Coolidge. And we admit that Uncle Joe (Biden) might be able to truly get off with a plea of mental incompetence.)

You would think they could come up with something better. After all, the current crop of Democrat and Never-Trumper Republicans (and the mainstream media) have no problem with lying daily and even hourly about so many things. Why can’t they turn their AIs on and at least come up with some juicy and interesting fiction? Or find some good novelists or even some unemployed Hollywood screenwriters?

Seriously, in recent efforts, the press and all the rest of this cabal have gone all the way back to 1992 video clips (that’s 33 years, folks!) to slam Trump, but it is the same old, same old: just another example of what they’ve been trying to use to get him for nearly a decade. No imagination. (Of course, some film and television critics would say this just proves that they are using Hollywood screenwriters.)

Reich, to give him a wee bit of credit, does seem to use a teenytiny bit of imagination in his diatribe. But he can’t even be consistent. On the one hand, he all but explicitly calls for a coup to overthrow not just Trump but apparently Congress and any State government that has (R) after its name. But at the same time, he writes: “Some day we will once again have a president. We will support people of integrity who seek the highest office in the land. People who will honor their oath of office.”

Since he is obviously speaking of what we might laughingly call “mainstream” Democrats, he is definitely imagining things. Of whom is he speaking? A new messiah with a D birthmark? Certainly, we cannot find such a creature in Democratic leadership ranks in 2025. (We won’t name names of those who clearly are not such a unicorn: no reason to be totally tacky.)

Perhaps, dear readers, you can come up with some fun urban legends, half-truths or out-and-out lies that his enemies can use to further diss Donald Trump. Who knows? There might even be some money in it.
