Goodbye, California?
Newsweek, one of the pitiful remnants of the print mainstream media, just before Independence Day published an article telling us that polls show that more Californians than ever (44% of those polled) want independence from the United States.
Here at The Price of Liberty, our first thought is “good luck, have fun, goodbye.” Oh, and don’t come crawling back when your mess gets even worse.”
Who would be better off if California were to secede, or be kicked out of the Union? We argue that despite the big hole in the economies of the remaining 49 States, the other States would be the primary winners. Much better off. Especially given how many people would flee California if that were to happen. (See the observation at the end of this commentary for some thoughts on that.)
We warrant that under its current powers-that-be, California itself would be far worse off: With the core cities already approaching the economic and social conditions of some of the worst Third-World urban areas, this move would speed up the collapse of California. Led by the very “elites” who have worked so hard to create the modern situation.
Now, for those of you who want to encourage California to depart from the Union, keep in mind, this is a political poll. Therefore, it would not be a criminal act to pretend to be a Californian and vote in favor of California leaving the Union when they again run this poll.
Of course, we are talking about California. If border jumpers (undocumented people, illegal immigrants) can vote in California elections, how can they possibly be consistent and not let people from other States also vote? So although it might legally be a crime to pretend to be (opps, to “identify” as) a California resident and vote in a real election on succession. For California to go away. Assuming the question of secession would ever be a subject for an honest election.
Of course, you might want to be ready to quickly leave once you vote – if the vote is in favor of California leaving.
Why’s that? Well, several reasons come to mind.
It is typical of Communist regimes to do things like “Five-Year Plans” and “Great Leaps Forward.” But this is California: be prepared for “Five-Month Plans” and “Mad Dashes Forward” to convert California’s society and economy to full blown State Socialism. (Their government is already there.)
Which brings us to another reason to get out. Given the massive number of tyrannical enactments that Sacramento will quicly pass, it will be necessary for California to build the Wall. An imitation more of the Inner-German Border and the Berlin Wall between 1961 and 1991, than of The Donald’s border wall along the Rio Grande and the New Mexico, Arizona, and California borders. (Though we think that California will have a ready source of scavenged materials to build a wall along the Arizona-California and Nevada-California borders because they’ll demolish the one between the Pacific and Rio Colorado (between California and Baja California del Norte).
We found it amusing that the video at the top of the Newsweek article (below) was talking about the much longer-existant Texan secession movement:
The case of Texas seceding would likely result in the opposite conditions as the departure of California: Texas would be far better off and the remaining 48 or 49 States would suffer. But that is a subject for another commentary.
Honestly, looking at Newsweek’s online search (AI-assisted, neat, huh?) page, it appears that dear Gavin Newsom enjoys just as much a cult of personality as anything Stalin, Mao, Castro, or Chi had or have.
This harks back to an observation from more than a year ago: How many people are fleeing California?
Simple, non-quantitative answer: Too many.
Both from the point of view of the Powers-That-Be of California, who are seeing more and more productive people (and companies) escaping from all the entities with their fingers dipping into their billfolds.
And from the perspective of many, many residents of the States where the escapees are fleeing to. Because they are bringing too much of their so-called liberal (really, regressive Tranzi) ideas and attitudes to their new home States. Too much power for government, too much tax-and-spend by government, too much an attitude of entitlement.
“Government should pay for this service X out of tax money because I want other people to subsidize me.” Another way of saying I want to be a parasite on other people instead of paying my own way.
No other State needs this kind of reinforcement of their own homegrown socialists, communists, and Tranzis: We have already seen the results of a lesser version of that in Nevada, Oregon, Arizona, and even Colorado.
Would it be possible to rehabilitate these refugees? Look at what happened in Germany, and think about what might happen when the North Korean regime finally collapses and the nation is reunited.
Which brings up one last, bizarre thought. What if this secession effort is all a big scam? What could happen if California seceded and then trashed itself for ten or so years, and came crawling on its collective knees to DC begging to be let back in? How many more tens of trillions of dollars would be necessary to “restore” the Golden State? The theme of nightmares, to be sure.
Think on these things.
