Hidden Toxins, Super Plants, and the Fight for a Healthier Future
Darren O’Lean, the environmental activist and wellness expert known for Netflix’s Down to Earth and the bestselling book Super Life, recently sat down with biohacker Dave Asprey to discuss a startling truth: we’re poisoning ourselves daily with things we consider safe.
From PFAS-laden dental floss to hormone-disrupting fragrances and invisible EMFs, modern conveniences are eroding our health in ways most people don’t realize.
Take tap water, for example. While it’s a blessing billions still don’t have, it’s often loaded with chemicals like PFAS—so-called “forever chemicals” linked to cancer and endocrine disruption.
These aren’t just in cookware or packaging anymore—they’re in the water we drink and the floss we slide between our teeth. The problem isn’t just the toxins, O’Lean says. It’s the system that lets them stay unregulated, quietly accumulating in our bodies and our environment.
Why Plants Are Both the Problem—and the Solution
Ironically, plants are at the center of both the toxic overload and our healing. “We ferment them, we cook them, we process them—all to reduce the toxins that are naturally in them,” O’Lean explains. And yet, some plants contain powerful compounds that interact with human biology in miraculous ways. One such compound is osmotin.
Osmotin, found naturally in many plants, binds to the adiponectin pathway in the human body—a pathway strongly associated with longevity and metabolic health. Researchers have found that high levels of osmotin can activate healing responses in the body, even reversing symptoms of diseases like Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and ALS. And unlike synthetic drugs, osmotin works in synergy with our biology.
Some of the most osmotin-rich plants, ironically, are also some of the most toxic if prepared improperly—nightshades, beans, and leafy greens with high oxalate or lectin content. But when grown and processed correctly, these plants may hold the key to regenerative health.
The Chemical Assault in Your Bathroom and Closet
Toxins aren’t just in your kitchen—they’re in your clothes, your shampoo, and the air freshener hanging in your Uber. “The fragrance industry is the Wild West,” O’Lean says. “A single ‘fragrance’ on a label can contain hundreds of undisclosed chemicals, many of which are endocrine disruptors.” These compounds mimic hormones in the body, leading to conditions like PCOS, low testosterone, and even infertility.
Microplastics in clothing and persistent EMF exposure from phones and Wi-Fi networks compound the problem. Asked which he’d rather deal with—EMFs or heavy metals—O’Lean didn’t hesitate: “Give me metals. I can detox from those. But EMFs are invisible, persistent, and everywhere.”
The problem is structural. Regulatory agencies like the EPA or FDA often rely on industry self-reporting, creating a system where plausible deniability trumps safety. It’s not just a public health failure—it’s a philosophical one. “We assume someone out there is keeping us safe,” says Asprey. “But the government doesn’t have your back.”
Can the Environment Heal If We Don’t?
O’Lean believes the environmental and personal health crises are mirrors of each other. “As within, so without,” he says. “The same shampoo that disrupts your hormones also pollutes the river. The same Teflon in your pan is destroying ecosystems. If we clean our bodies, we clean the world.”
His company Barùkas focuses on producing nutrient-dense superfoods sustainably, but he’s also pushing for deeper reform. He proposes solutions like financial penalties that dilute shareholder equity and transfer power to those harmed by toxic products. “Hit them where it hurts—their profit margin,” he says.
One promising development: there are now alternatives to PFAS in packaging, being tested by major brands. But that progress depends on consumer pressure. “Let’s vote with our dollars. Let’s create a demand for clean products, clean homes, and clean lives.”
Practical Biohacks for Cleaner Living
O’Lean and Asprey agree on several easy wins. First, filter your water. Reverse osmosis systems can dramatically reduce contaminants like PFAS. For the whole house, carbon and ceramic filters improve the water you bathe in and breathe in vapor.
Next, improve your air. HEPA filters, houseplants, and ditching synthetic fragrances make a big difference. Then, clean with simple ingredients like vinegar, water, and essential oils—though be cautious. Even lavender has come under fire for possible endocrine effects. “Use lemon or frankincense instead,” Asprey suggests.
What about food? Both men advocate for a varied, whole-food diet—but not necessarily raw or vegan. O’Lean emphasizes that proper preparation (soaking, fermenting, or cooking) reduces harmful compounds like oxalates or lectins. “I grow my own Swiss chard, but I cook it before eating it,” he says. Asprey adds, “Every traditional culture processed their plants. That’s not anti-nature—it’s wisdom.”
The Promise of Adiponectin Activation
Adiponectin is a special protein made by body fat. It plays an important role in many processes that keep us healthy, including how our bodies handle fat, produce energy, respond to infections, and manage blood sugar levels. It also helps protect brain cells and supports the growth of new ones.
Research shows that people with higher levels of adiponectin tend to have a lower risk of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. One way to boost adiponectin levels is by eating a healthy diet. Because of its connection to these diseases, adiponectin may be useful not only for spotting early warning signs but also for tracking how well treatments and lifestyle changes are working.
Back To Osmotin
Back to osmotin: it’s not widely available yet, but O’Lean is working with the Italian government and researchers to develop plant strains that produce it in high quantities. This could transform medicine by using food to activate healing in a non-invasive, affordable way.
The implications for longevity and disease reversal are profound. O’Lean shared the story of Dr. William Bitney, a former MIT physician with stage-four Parkinson’s. After taking osmotin-rich extracts, he now shows no symptoms. “He won’t say he’s cured,” O’Lean notes, “but he says he lives symptom-free. That’s something.”
Moving from Awareness to Action
The final message is simple: awareness without action is pointless. “Start with your water, your floss, your air,” O’Lean says. “We don’t need perfect routines. Just better ones.”
Small choices today create massive downstream effects. Skip the fragrance-loaded Uber. Buy clean food. Filter your water. And perhaps most importantly, keep asking questions.
“You don’t know how good you can feel,” says Asprey, “until you stop doing the things that make you weak.”
That’s not fear… it’s empowerment. Start small, and it might just be the start of something truly transformational.
