Klaus Schwab Accused of Lavish Misuse of Funds, Inappropriate Conduct During WEF Tenure
The probe reportedly found that Schwab, 87, used WEF funds for personal expenses, including first-class flights for his wife–who held no business role in the trips–and 14 hotel massages, half of which were never reimbursed. He also allegedly accepted luxury gifts in violation of WEF policy, such as Tiffany cufflinks and Russian tea sets. Schwab’s spokesperson claimed he either donated the gifts or displayed them at the WEF’s headquarters.
The investigation, initiated after a whistleblower complaint in April paints a picture of the WEF being operated as a “fiefdom” for Schwab’s benefit, rather than a neutral platform for global dialogue. His conduct also reportedly included unsettling emails to female colleagues, including a message to a female executive in June 2020 reading, “Do you feel that I am thinking of you?” Schwab’s team has denied wrongdoing, asserting the message was paternal, not suggestive.
Following the release of preliminary findings, Schwab filed a criminal complaint in Geneva against his accusers. The former executive chairman officially resigned from the WEF in April 2025 after stepping into a non-executive role in 2024.
In a statement to The Wall Street Journal, Schwab said, “Even if I am no longer part of it, I deeply hope the Forum will remain a trusted bridge-builder in a divided world.” The WEF, known for hosting influential panels on issues like climate change and disinformation, has not yet publicly addressed the details of the investigation.
