Why Ethan Conrad’s promotion is significant for the Chicago Cubs

While the MLB Draft was taking place this weekend, the Chicago Cubs bumped up last year’s first-round pick, Ethan Conrad, to Low‑A Myrtle Beach after a few games in the Arizona Complex League(ACL).

This decision comes nearly a year after he was drafted, and Conrad is now officially part of the Cubs’ prospect pool. Conrad’s been a ghost for almost a year after a dislocated shoulder ended his college season. A stress fracture wiped out his first spring training this year. That’s a nightmare scenario for someone who has yet to play a single game professionally.

The Cubs drafted Conrad for his bat. But you can’t develop a hitter who never gets reps. His ACL stint was a warm‑up. Myrtle Beach is his first real test.

This promotion is not about optimism. It’s about urgency.

The Cubs need to know:

• Is the bat still real?
• Can he stay on the field?
• Can he move fast enough to matter in 2025 and beyond?

If Conrad answers “yes” to all three, he becomes one of the most important prospects in the organization overnight.

Meanwhile, Kane Kepley, the 2025 2nd-round pick from the University of North Carolina, has quietly taken advantage of Conrad’s absence to become one of the top-hitting prospects in the Cubs’ system.

The left-handed outfielder stands at only 5-foot-8 and weighs just 180 pounds. He will not be among the Cubs’ power-hitting prospects, but is one of their best at putting the ball in play.

As of this writing, he is currently at High-A South Bend Cubs, hitting .258 with 5 HRs and 44 RBIs. He has walked 76 times while striking out 54 times, living up to expectations of being elite in plate discipline and consistent contact so far. He played a huge role in South Bend winning the Midwest League West Division first-half title.

So even though he deserves promotion to AA Knoxville, Kepley still sits in High‑A, not because he hasn’t earned the next step. But because the Cubs might need him to grease the wheels of a July deal. That’s where Conrad’s promotion becomes more than a developmental footnote.

If Kepley gets moved at the trade deadline, the Cubs need someone ready to slide into his developmental lane. Conrad is now positioned to be that guy.

The Cubs aren’t expecting Conrad to match Kepley’s production immediately. But they are hoping he shows enough in Myrtle Beach to justify a second promotion later this summer.

If Conrad hits — even modestly — the Cubs can:

• Bump him to High‑A South Bend to fill Kepley’s spot
• Keep the outfield pipeline intact
• Avoid creating a developmental hole if they trade from their prospect depth

His job is simple: Stay healthy, prove he can hit even after missing almost a year, and force the Cubs to keep promoting him.

If he does that, he becomes the natural successor to Kepley’s role in the system. If he doesn’t, the draft bust conversation will start to dominate, fair or not. 

The Cubs hope he is ready to make up for the lost time in his development due to injuries. This is the first real pressure moment of Conrad’s pro career. The Cubs need clarity, leverage, and options heading into the trade deadline.
