Chicago Bears should “absolutely” sign this top defensive free agent, NFL analyst says
The Chicago Bears could be about to load up on defense similarly to how the organization built a turnkey offense for second-year quarterback Caleb Williams, last spring.
After all, coordinator Dennis Allen’s unit survived mostly on creating an obscene amount of takeaways but struggled to generate consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks, which allows a defense to truly dictate to opposing offenses.
That might be about to change in 2026.
Chicago Bears urged to sign Trey Hendrickson when free agency begins
Cincinnati Bengals All-Pro Trey Hendrickson is primed to become one of the most coveted free agent edge rushers to hit the market, and could be a top candidate for general manager Ryan Poles and the Bears to target as an upgrade opposite Montez Sweat.
Veteran NFL analyst Mike Tanier suggests that signing Hendrickson is the move that should be Poles’ top priority in the weeks ahead.
“There are a lot of connect-the-dots rumors circulating about the Bears signing Trey Hendrickson,” Tanier writes for the Too Deep Zone. “Who played for Dennis Allen in New Orleans. It’s probably just offseason clickbait and prattle. But the Bears should absolutely go for it.”
Signing Hendrickson would signal the Bears are all-in on building a defense that can be a complementary weapon to the offense’s late-game heroics that powered the 2025 run to the NFC Divisional Playoffs.
Hendrickson, 31, could be enticed by the chance to reunite with Allen and legitimately chase a Super Bowl ring in the NFC.
Over the past three seasons, Hendrickson produced 39 sacks, and if he’s fully healthy this offseason, could be the type of addition that puts the Bears’ defense over the top.
