Chicago Bears: Kevin Byard gets disrespectfully low ranking on NFL top 101 free agent list
The Chicago Bears led the NFL in takeaways last season with Dennis Allen in place as their new defensive coordinator. While their approach was the textbook example of “bend but don’t break,” they were able to, for the most part, keep opponents’ out of the end zone late in games, though oftentimes the offense had to play from behind.
At the end of the day, though, it did not matter how many yards the defense gave up because they usually came up with big plays when they needed them. Kevin Byard and the rest of the secondary made life difficult for opposing quarterbacks, coming away with many crucial interceptions.
The problem in Chicago, though, is that Byard and virtually their entire veteran safety room is about to hit free agency.

Byard will be 33 years old during the 2026 NFL season, but if last year was any indication, he still has a lot left to give. He led the NFC with seven interceptions and registered 93 tackles.
However, despite the fact that Byard was named to the Pro Bowl and was a First Team All-Pro, NFL.com ranked him just 86th on their list of the top 101 free agents:
“It would be a shame to see Byard leave Chicago, where he all but ran the show for a playmaking secondary.”
It would, indeed, be a shame if Byard left Chicago. He clearly excelled in Allen’s system and was able to help elevate the defense to a high level. Of the team’s 23 interceptions in 2025, he accounted for nearly one-third of them. Replacing him, indeed, would be difficult.
Spotrac has Byard’s market value listed as two years and $15.6 million on his next contract, or $7.8 million a year. Depending on how Ryan Poles navigates the Bears salary cap and free agency, a reunion is still possible.
