OTL: End of an Era in the AFC North
For many Ravens fans, this is uncharted territory. Following an unexpectedly bad and uneven season, it was time for John Harbaugh to go as Head Coach. Owner Steve Bisciotti and GM Eric DeCosta spoke candidly about that decision, as well as some of the team’s shared shortcomings, on Tuesday afternoon.
But as that press conference was unfolding, the Ravens were joined by one of their closest peers on the coaching carousel:
Breaking: After a historic 19-season run in Pittsburgh, Mike Tomlin just informed his team that he is stepping down as the Steelers head coach, sources tell @JFowlerESPN and me.

While it’d certainly be intriguing to see the Ravens name Mike Tomlin their next HC, it’s just as unlikely. That said, both Mike Tomlin and Harbaugh should be proud of what they collectively accomplished in a difficult AFC North:

Looking ahead to the future, Bisciotti had a ton to offer. If you’re short on time, these were the headlines:
Top takeaways from Steve Bisciotti’s press conference:
1) He was transparent and forthright about his decision to fire John Harbaugh. He relied on his instincts, and knew he wouldn’t regret the decision.
2) He loves John like a brother, and it ate him up when people unfairly…

Truthfully, it was a breath of fresh air from the owner of a franchise that’s felt stale this year. While a number of questions remain, it’s hard not to feel excited about Baltimore’s future:
Honestly, a really well done presser.
I think they were pretty blunt about the failures of the team. They specifically spoke to the OL and the pass rush.
They’ve already fired the coaching staff.
I feel good about where we’re going. But now it’s time to execute.#RavensFlock
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) January 13, 2026
There’s no mistake that step one of this entire process is going to be the appointment of the Ravens’ next Head Coach. However, an interesting takeaway was the stated importance of extending QB Lamar Jackson:
One of the biggest takeaways of this presser is the #Ravens are motivated, and have communicated, that getting a Lamar Jackson extension done before FA is critical.
EDC specifically said they could be buyers in FA, and acknowledged they normally aren’t.#RavensFlock

#Ravens GM Eric DeCosta on a Lamar Jackson extension:
– Carried over 10M in cap space. Have a good chunk.
– Lamar would clear a good amount of cap space.
– Haven’t traditionally been big ticket hunters, but they could do that with cap space.Lets get that damn deal done!
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) January 13, 2026
While it was always likely that Jackson would be extended after Harbaugh was fired, the ripple effect of such a move wasn’t something I expected Steve Bisciotti and Eric DeCosta to be so transparent about. The QB’s importance to Baltimore is clear. But, as Cole Jackson highlighted, the subsequent flexibility and how DeCosta planned to capitalize on it was not:
Could a Lamar Jackson extension facilitate enough cap space to sign Trey Hendrickson and Joel Bitonio?
I think that’d go a longggggg way in positioning you to go BPA in the draft.
Thoughts?#RavensFlock

Historically, the Ravens have depended on development to stay competitive. This year, as Bisciotti acknowledged on Tuesday, that development never came and injuries to key players magnified the impact of that:
Bisciotti with a harsh criticism of the coaching staff. He said too many people that they were counting on did not improve. Mentioned the OL, in particular, didn’t improve.
Clearest sign yet that not too many Ravens assistants will be hanging around.— Jeff Zrebiec (@jeffzrebiec) January 13, 2026
Steve Bisciotti said there were a lot of guys on the 2025 team that they expected to take the next step who did not take that step.
He specifically pointed to the offensive line.
— Ryan Mink (@ryanmink) January 13, 2026
Eric DeCosta on Nnamdi Madubuike:
– He can’t discuss the medical situation.
– Not having Nnamdi was very hard on the defense
– Still looking for information on his situation before finding a resolution. Not great bob!#RavensFlock
— Cole Jackson (@ColeJacksonFB) January 13, 2026
A Jackson extension – especially one similar to those Tom Brady would sign to extend New England’s window – could give DeCosta the financial ammunition to incite quick change along Baltimore’s trenches. Similarly, a staff with new messaging that resonates with and pushes players to improve could supplement any additions DeCosta makes.
Meanwhile, the latter piece will also be influenced by Jackson, making an extension even more integral to clarifying the team’s future. Although Bisciotti was sure to note the limit to which Jackson will be involved in the Head Coach hiring decision, it’s clear there will be heavy involvement:
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti on how much of a say Lamar Jackson has in Baltimore’s next head coach:
“A lot of say, but he has no power. I have the power. They have opinions and I want them all. I care about my players very much, but I can’t give them power.”

This is transparent and illuminating. https://t.co/qBw9HC653f

There are still plenty of ideas swirling around what Bisciotti may look for in Harbaugh’s heir to the throne in Charm City, but he did state interest in failed ex-coaches. While this could mean absolutely nothing, it does signal interest in Brian Flores, Robert Saleh, Mike McDaniel, and others:
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti on the HC process
“Unlike 18 years ago, I’m very intrigued by coaches that were the hottest OCs and DCs 5,6,7 years ago in their cycles, got jobs and got to teams that were non-competitive and didn’t have a QB, and they grind for 3-4 years and… pic.twitter.com/Asb0I2pvMH
— Kevin Oestreicher (@koestreicher34) January 13, 2026
Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti very much left the door open for a potential retread to land his opening in Baltimore:
“The one thing that I know that I will probably take it on the chin is if our final candidate is an ex-coach who has a losing record, and you all are going to… pic.twitter.com/h0b4bfBECj
— Bobby Trosset (@bobbybaltim0re) January 13, 2026
Either way, Bisciotti has to nail the decision. From there, it’ll be up to DeCosta to surround him with talent and right the wrongs of this past few years:
Eric better have one helluva draft
Eric better sign Lamar
Eric better upgrade the team via FA
Eric better recognize Steve will fire him too! https://t.co/EiUhzbSuMS— QadryIsmail (@IamQadryIsmail) January 13, 2026
Fun times in Baltimore!
