Cubs sign ex-Phillies player, just not the one fans were hoping for

Chicago Cubs, Cubs News, Scott Kingery, Ranger Suarez

This off-season the Chicago Cubs have been rumored to be in the starting pitching market, despite Shota Imanaga accepting the qualifying offer and returning on a one year deal. So far, they have missed out on Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce, but rumors continue to swirl about their interest in other top tier arms such as Framber Valdez and Ranger Suarez.

Of those available, Suarez, who was formerly a Philadelphia Phillies pitcher, seems like a logical fit, with several MLB networks supporting that idea. Recently, it was announced that the Cubs did sign an ex-Phillies player, but it wasn’t Suarez.

According to Kingery’s transaction page on MLB.com, Kingery signed a minor league deal with the Cubs back on November 18, but news of the signing recently was announced. Although these types of deals are part of the off-season process, it has Chicago fans desiring for more as Kingery’s career is on life support.

Back in 2015, the Phillies drafted Kingery 48th overall. He played a big part in their 2018 and 2019 seasons, posting a 2.7 bWAR in 2019, but struggled mightily from 2020-2022 and eventually fizzled out of the big leagues. After a two year drought, Kingery finally returned to the show last year with the Angels, but was limited to a small sample size of just 19 games.

Now on a minor league deal with an invite to the Cubs big league camp, Kingery will need to prove himself in February/March next year in order to set up opportunities for the 2026 season. The utility player has some value in his defensive flexibility, but certainly will be a dark horse candidate to break Chicago’s roster out of camp.

While minor-league depth signings like Kingery are routine, Cubs fans are clearly hoping for something far bigger. With the rotation still needing an impact arm, the fanbase would love to see the organization bring in a different ex-Phillie like Suárez. Kingery may be a low-risk flyer, but for most Cubs fans, he’s not the former Phillie they were waiting for.
