Chicago Cubs named “perfect fit” for this MLB free agent
The Chicago Cubs are still finding ways they can improve their roster this offseason. While some big-name players have been signed, there are still major free agents available that can fit the team well. Free agents are still looking to find a new home and there are some players who would fit well with what the Cubs have going on. Let’s take a closer look at one player who is being considered as a “perfect fit” for the franchise this winter.
Framber Valdez is named as a perfect fit for the Chicago Cubs
MLB’s Andrew Simon wrote an article finding the perfect fits for the top remaining free agents. He listed the Cubs as the best fit for Framber Valdez and highlighted a questionable rotation and defensive infield to make the argument.
“If Chicago isn’t going to retain or replace [Kyle] Tucker, then the top of the rotation is a clear area to address instead. Matthew Boyd was excellent in 2025 but is about to turn 35 and just had his first healthy season since 2019. Cade Horton has made all of 22 MLB starts. Shota Imanaga was hit hard in the second half of ’25. For a team that hasn’t been able to dethrone the Brewers atop the NL Central, that might not be good enough. Not only would Valdez bring the most polished resume of any free-agent starter – averaging 30 starts per year and a 3.21 ERA since 2022 – but his grounder-heavy approach would look great on a team with Dansby Swanson and Nico Hoerner vacuuming up anything hit to the middle infield.”
Adding a quality top-of-the-rotation pitcher like Valdez would be an incredible fit for the Cubbies, especially with the health of Justin Steele being up in the air. Chicago was in the top half of the sport last season in many of the major stats for starting pitching. However, adding a starting pitcher who has playoff experience and effective stuff is never a bad thing. It will be intriguing to see if the Cubs are interested in bringing Valdez to Wrigleyville this offseason.
