Lamar Jackson plays Football in 5 Days

We are now just one day away from the start of the 2025 NFL season, with the Eagles and Cowboys getting us underway on TNF, and just a few days away from the Ravens season opener in Buffalo. To kick things off, Pro Football Talk listed Baltimore 4th in the league power rankings:

I understand the rankings, but I can’t imagine KC is the second-best team in the league at this point (that’s probably going to bite me in the behind later). The Ravens follow Buffalo, which is in-line with the Vegas lines heading into Sunday night. Historically, Jackson playing the underdog goes pretty well:
Ravens are 1.5-point underdogs at Bills for Sunday night’s opener, according to @ESPNBET.
Lamar Jackson is 10-5 as an underdog, which is the best record as an underdog in the Super Bowl era (minimum 10 starts), per ESPN Research.
As an underdog, he is 12-2-1 against the spread.

As excitement for the new season culminates, I do have to share my predictions, which I’ll weave in throughout today’s Out to Lunch. But first, let’s take a look at Good Morning Football’s:
Our AFC playoff predictions

I’ll start by saying I do agree with each of the hosts that the Baltimore Ravens will win the AFC North once again. The reason? There’s primarily one:

But even aside from Jackson, Ravens fans have a ton to be excited about. Looking at the newly released PR Depth Chart, there’s studs all over the place:

This is a young, talented team, and it’s illustrated in the fact that three rookies are listed as starters. Speaking of rookies, ESPN expects big things from S Malaki Starks:
The Ravens haven’t had a Defensive Rookie of the Year since Terrell Suggs in 2003.
First-round pick Malaki Starks could change that.
ESPN calls him a “perfect match” to fill the stat sheet in Baltimore’s defense. pic.twitter.com/TWqghDsU7d
— Ravens Nation ð™‡ð™„ð™‘𙀠(@LIVERavenNation) September 1, 2025
Despite being talked about plenty, could this draft pick still be going under the radar? Starks really is the perfect fit for this defense and will slide straight into a major role with the opportunity to capitalize.
Meanwhile, the more talked about rookie, Mike Green, is getting DROY shouts:
CBS Sports’ John Breech has Mike Green as his bold pick for DROY:
“A front seven player has won this award in 7 of the last 9 years…Green is in the perfect division to rack up sacks.” pic.twitter.com/AWFj1oHvYX
— Ravens Nation ð™‡ð™„ð™‘𙀠(@LIVERavenNation) September 2, 2025
There’s certainly potential for both rookies to win the award, and while I do understand it’ll typically go to an EDGE rusher, I have a feeling Starks could be in line for a huge season. And, as I’ve noted a few times this offseason, Green has healthy competition.
Tavius Robinson is a name we continue to see more of, and the Ravens released some footage of his time with Jarret Johnson a few weeks back:
“You’re the perfect person to be representing No. 95.”@Taviusrobinson was made to be a Raven

Robinson and Green are different players, so I don’t expect him to directly block the rookie, but it could limit some snaps. Either way, fans are excited for Green, so sound off on this in the comments:
True or False:

But back to predictions. The Ravens will win their division with a 13-4 record and the top seed in the AFC. My full playoff predictions are below:
AFC: Ravens, Bills, Broncos, Jaguars | Bengals, Chiefs, Titans
NFC: Eagles, Packers, 49ers, Falcons | Commanders, Lions, Cardinals
But of course, for Ravens fans to be happy, the team needs to produce in the playoffs. To me, there will be two keys to that. First, Lamar Jackson has to continue to step up his game, which Jamison Hensley wrote a piece about on Tuesday:
As the Ravens near the start of the 2025 season, Lamar Jackson is at a point in his career where he’s entering his prime while dealing with the same questions.
My piece on how Jackson has improved and how playoff disappointment still lingers:https://t.co/Gl3jLeR0Ue
— Jamison Hensley (@jamisonhensley) September 2, 2025
Second, the defense has to force more turnovers:
Ravens defense has forced only 3 turnovers in the playoffs since 2018 when Lamar’s career started. Insane. And all they wanna do is blame Lamar. He’s been a very good playoff QB since Todd Monken took over at OC. Need the defense to step up and create turnovers.
— Alex Gardner (@Alex_Gardner25) September 2, 2025
If they do that, they’ll win. And this year, I think they will, with a victory over the Eagles in the Super Bowl.
How do you think this season shakes out?
