The Chicago Cubs have reportedly added a seasoned arm to their pitching depth, signing a seven-year MLB veteran with a career 3.88 ERA. The move adds experience and potential stability to a staff that’s dealt with its share of ups and downs this season.

According to Jon Heyman, the Cubs have agreed to terms with southpaw Genesis Cabrera. Mike Gonzalez first reported that the sides were close. Cabrera declined an assignment with the New York Mets Triple-A team earlier this week after he was designated for assignment.
Cubs fans will remember Genesis Cabrera from his days with the St. Louis Cardinals
Cabrera, now 28 years old, debuted in the big leagues in 2019 with the Cardinals. He spent five seasons with St. Louis, and compiled a 4.14 ERA over that time. Afterwards he spent two seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays. He made just six appearances with the Mets this year before being removed from their 40-man roster.
What to expect from Genesis Cabrera?
On the mound, Cabrera brings heat, averaging 96 MPH on his sinker and four-seam fastball. With that, he regularly mixes in a cutter and curve ball, with a splint change up the most infrequently used pitch. Walks have haunted him throughout his career, evidenced by a career 11.3% walk rate.
At this time, it’s unclear as to whether Cabrera’s deal with the Cubs is a MLB or MiLB deal. If he does report to the big leagues, or join Chicago’s 40-man roster at any time, he will join Drew Pomeranz and Caleb Thielbar as left-handed pitching options out of the bullpen.
