OTL: A Very Busy Weekend Around the AFC North

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Anything interesting happen this weekend? Not much. Just a two-time Pro Bowl tackle who came back from a couple rough injuries to continue being an elite pass protector getting a deal from the team that took him with the sixth pick all the way back in 2016. Normal Monday stuff, right…? Welcome back to the Ravens Ronnie Stanley!

Knee-Jerk Reactions: Ronnie Stanley Signs 3-Year Extension

So what is the buzz around this monumental move from the Purple and Black?

This is a reasonable take. You can never be too secure at the tackle position and this is a good offensive tackle draft. The Ravens may have given themselves the ability to pick the best player available but OT is certainly still an option for them near the end of the first round. A rookie tackle who can be an insurance plan at left tackle for the moment could end up being the future star of the offensive line. The Ravens could see Pat Mekari leave this offseason and he was the everything man for this unit, so absolutely they should be diligent with the tackle prospects.

Keeping Stanley away from the Chiefs is absolutely the best possible cherry on top. Stanley isn’t trading one All-Pro quarterback and former MVP for another in Patrick Mahomes. I think the biggest thing is that this move is about keeping a good thing going. The Ravens need to protect Lamar Jackson because as long as they have him they have a shot to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl. The Ravens are worried about finally breaking through and being champions, Stanley’s payday was worth it. This was the best possible deal for Baltimore.

I think Stanley can afford a beer quite comfortably, but I agree with Spencer Shultz here. Ronnie Stanley is absolutely working himself to a future spot in the Ravens ring of honor. There’s a great loyalty from both sides for this new deal and that’s rare in professional sports.

But wait! There’s unfortunately other news in the AFC North. And it isn’t good for the Ravens. First off, we learned that after demanding out, Myles Garrett isn’t actually going anywhere.

Those Stanley-Garrett battles will continue for the foreseeable future.

That wasn’t all though.

Adam Schefter has reports that D.K. Metcalf has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Steelers presumably have Russell Wilson coming back as their quarterback. They haven’t won a playoff game in eight years… you can paint this as much as you want but this helps the Steelers a lot. They have a lot of questions but they just got a big star at the receiver position.

Yeah that Best Player Available thing is looking a lot like a cornerback now. I’m with you Cole. The AFC North is the division of the wide receiver now. Nate Wiggins was a good start last year. Maybe the Ravens can find a similar prospect with their 27th pick.

This is a good one. I guess we’ll see them at the Catalina Wine Mixer. They may have just become best friends.

Yup. Pretty Much.

The Steelers were overly reliant on George Pickens for the big play. Their offensive game plan was essentially run, run, then throw a moon ball to Pickens. Metcalf makes the Steelers offense much more dynamic. Most importantly, as Rappoport says in the video, the Steelers got a big play threat in his prime.

Okay we’ve got some deals but the real NFL Free agency frenzy is coming right up. There is so much speculation all over the place it’s almost a part of the atmosphere. Here’s an interesting question posed by Nic Mason on X. How excited would you be if the Ravens signed Cooper Kupp?

I would say I’d be at an excitement level of six out of ten. I don’t necessarily think the receiver position has to be a free agent priority this season as Jackson has great chemistry with Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. Signing Kupp a few years ago would sound like a complete game-changing move. Now though, it sounds like signing another old receiver for a couple of strong seasons before he retires. There’s nothing wrong with it. It would be fun, he’s still spry enough that he recorded 67 receptions and six touchdowns last season. I kind of like the idea of drafting a receiver in the second or third round and letting him develop. It’s also important to remember that Devontez Walker still has a lot of potential as a big play threat that is untapped. Kupp would be a good Raven. It would be fun but it’s not a move I’m barking down the Castle doors for.
