THE BIG CRAB CAKE: Mr. Jones & Me

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Travis Jones is the big crab cake in Week 11

When the Baltimore Ravens began to develop a reputation for defensive excellence, Ray Lewis was the piston that propelled combustion for Marvin Lewis’ defense. While Ray was doing his thing, making highlight reel, bone-jarring tackles and building what would be a Hall of Fame career, his supporting cast assumed the dirty work. Players like Tony Siragusa, Sam Adams, Kelly Gregg and Haloti Ngata took on blockers to keep Ray clean so he could do his thing.

The dirty work is unheralded but just as critical to defensive success as the player putting the finishing touch on a successful play. It’s all part of the ultimate team sport – football!

Today’s Ravens cast is altogether different but the roles, the responsibilities assumed in team play, are as prevalent as ever. Some will still get the glory and deservedly so, while others get lost in the pile of humanity that ensues within seconds of the snap. The battles in the trenches can get lost because our focus follows the eye candy, aka the football. When the dust in the trenches settles, there are winners and losers. And for the Ravens, a regular winner in those skirmishes is Travis Jones.

Jones has missed a lot of practice time this season as he tries to fight through a nagging ankle injury. Even when he’s not at 100%, his presence is felt – his absences noticeable. Against the Bengals, Jones loomed large and his efforts along with the attention he commanded, allowed Nnamdi Madubuike to have a standout game during which he had three sacks.

Fast forward to Pittsburgh where Jones fought through ankle issues for the benefit of a couple of colleagues, namely Odafe Oweh and Roquan Smith. It’s no coincidence that Jones’ fighting through pain and interior offensive linemen for 37 snaps v. the Steelers took place while Oweh and Smith both had their best games of the season.

Like his great predecessors who mixed it up in the trenches for the benefit of Pro Bowl defenders, Travis Jones deserves his flowers for being an enabler of success. And he deserves this week’s Jimmy’s Famous Seafood’s Big Crab Cake award as the game’s unsung hero.

Big props to the big man, Travis Jones.
