OTL: Fun was Had, History was Made in Tampa

Mark Andrews TD OTL

If you went to bed early last night, you probably had a completely different idea of how the game ended up, and you missed a wild contest.

The Ravens extended their five-game winning streak with authority last night, and made it six straight victories over the Buccaneers dating back to 2002. The game’s final score ended up making it look a lot closer than it was for the majority of the action, but the first quarter may have had some of us thinking the scoreboard would be tilted the other direction.

From the get-go, the Bucs marched down the field and made it look pretty easy as Mike Evans found the end zone. In a bit of a prescient event, Ray Lewis had been interviewed before the game, and discussed how communication and pressure (or lack thereof) in certain situations was what caused the defense’s struggles…

…and Baltimore ran into issues early, especially when covering the flats.

The end of the first quarter saw the Bucs out-gaining the Ravens by a whopping 140 yards to 18. Ten of Baltimore’s first quarter yards came with just two seconds left in the quarter. Thankfully, when the page flipped to the second quarter, Baltimore started to look like a whole different team, and it was the team that we’ve become pleasantly accustomed to for the past few weeks.

Baltimore’s first scoring drive of the game would see all three of their tight ends record catches, with the touchdown being reeled in by Mark Andrews. The TD (one of his two on the night) not only meant Andrews had scored in back-to-back games, but it also saw Mark eclipsing Todd Heap’s record for most receiving touchdowns in franchise history.

Not to be outdone, Marlon Humphrey doubled down on his own stat sheet and eclipsed a personal best in his own right. As Tampa tried to counter-punch, the Bucs had the ball in the red zone, and Baker Mayfield dropped back with good protection and all day to throw. Eventually, Mayfield tried to fire a throw into the back corner, but Marlon had other ideas.

That pick was Humphrey’s third of the season, tying his single-season best. He didn’t wait long to break his personal record, either.

Unfortunately, Humphrey would come down banged up after the play and wouldn’t return. Marlon wasn’t the only meaningful absence in this one, though; the complexion of the game started to change a bit after Mike Evans exited the game for Tampa as he appeared to re-aggravate his injured hamstring. Unfortunately, when all appeared to be academic in the contest, Chris Godwin also went down for the Bucs, having to be carted off in an air cast.

Godwin’s injury certainly appeared serious, and it looks like he may have to set his sights on his recovery for next season. There will be plenty of debate, I’m sure, around the NFL world about the necessity of him even being in the game in that situation, but the Bucs were trying to reel the Ravens back in after a successful onside kick allowed them to score a touchdown to cut into Baltimore’s lead. Fortunately for the Ravens, a pair of big plays earlier in the contest appeared to have made it too little, too late.

The first was a gorgeous moonshot of a throw from Lamar Jackson to Rashod Bateman, who eclipsed 100 yards on the night with the catch…

…with the second being a massive run by Derrick Henry as the Ravens went from being backed up deep into their own territory to an instant red zone possession.

Henry was mad at himself that he didn’t finish off the play, but he would haul in a receiving TD later in the contest on his way to 182 all-purpose yards. Lamar Jackson finished with another dominant showing in his home state, posting a casual Jackson 5, with as many touchdowns as he had incompletions. Lamar finished 17 for 22 with over 300 total yards and a passer rating of 158.1, just 0.2 points shy of yet another perfect rating.

The game was pretty crazy all around. It wasn’t always perfect or consistent, and the refs did what they could to slow it down with 17 total penalties on the night. Nine of those went against Baltimore, and in a shock to no one, a few of those looked very questionable.

Still, in a Monday Night Football contest on the road against another 4-2 opponent, you’ll take a win that you gut out.

A short week and another road contest against the Browns awaits.
