OTL: A Ravens Reunion in Store via Trade?
I had plans of starting today’s Out to Lunch one way, but the Kansas City Chiefs put an end to that Wednesday morning:
BREAKING: Chiefs are trading for WR DeAndre Hopkins in exchange for a 5th round pick that can become a 4th rounder, per @RapSheet pic.twitter.com/cQA1TFSHDY
— Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) October 23, 2024
Tying a bow on some of what I wrote about last week, another veteran WR that many Ravens fans wanted is off the board, instead supporting the inevitable Chiefs. It feels like yet another name that’s passed by GM Eric DeCosta and Baltimore, but I’m less concerned about this one.
Instead, I’d rather see this unfold:
The Rams have called multiple teams about trading former Super Bowl MVP Cooper Kupp sources tell @mikesilver, @jourdanrodrigue, and me.
The Rams have indicated a willingness to take on some of the ‘24 salary and are seeking a 2nd round pick.— Dianna Russini (@DMRussini) October 22, 2024
WOOOOOOOOO BUDDY THIS IS THE ONE THIS IS THE ONEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Having Kupp not need to take on a full time load, his experience and attention to detail in the playoffs and the fact that you could certainly let him go after the year if the financials don’t work out? YUP!!! https://t.co/WNjwe2u2Qe

Cooper Kupp has been a major “what if” for Ravens fans ever since the 2017 NFL Draft, when Baltimore was rumored to be interested. His blend of physicality, route running, speed, and experience would be another ridiculous addition to an already unreal offense. Sign me up.
Another reason I’m unconcerned about not getting DeAndre Hopkins is the play of Rashod Bateman. He’s finally matching performances with the hype he’s received this offseason, which has been a hugely important development in Todd Monken’s offense.

Speaking of Monken, the man deserves his praise. After a couple weeks of inconsistent play, Baltimore’s offense has taken off and looks unstoppable. These rankings are insane:
Ravens offensive rankings per game through Week 7:
Points: 1st (tied)
Total yards: 1st
Rushing yards: 1st
Yards per play: 1st
Red-Zone TD%: 1st
Sacks allowed: 1st (tied)
Third down%: 2nd
Passing yards: 5th— Ryan Mink (@ryanmink) October 22, 2024

Monken has continued to develop this offense after a strong first season, and when everything’s clicking, it seems Thanos-like: inevitable.
At the same time, a huge part of the unit’s success is the presence of new RB Derrick Henry. As someone who was unsure of the impact he’d have, it’s impossible to deny now. Henry is what’s helping this team close games, and he’s what’s making them feel like such a juggernaut.

Most rushing yards since 2018
1. Derrick Henry 9,885
2. Henry after contact 7,028
3. Nick Chubb 6,533

5. Joe Mixon 6,187
6. Josh Jacobs 6,085 pic.twitter.com/tXbAVEMUwc— NFL on CBS (@NFLonCBS) October 22, 2024
Don’t forget to read the second name on that list. What’s crazy, though, is without Zyon McCollum, Henry’s numbers would be even higher. Give credit where it’s due – McCollum took an incredible angle to bring King Henry down on Monday night:
“Caught up” isn’t really what happened but it was Bucs CB Zyon McCollum, who reached a top speed of 21.85 mph(!) and took a good angle. https://t.co/yPnnp9EiEH pic.twitter.com/MOak5ayJHz

Aside from Henry, what really keeps Baltimore’s offense clicking is the talent of Lamar Jackson. I’m burying the lede a bit here, but Jackson’s play continues to amaze and he’s well on his way to his third MVP this season. Listen to Colin Cowherd gush over Jackson’s play here:

While Cowherd has always been a fan, it’s hard to argue that Jackson is the league’s best player:

Lamar Jackson on “Monday Night Football” over his career:
20 pass TDs
0 INTs
300+ total YPG
6-2 starting record
0.28 EPA per playAll of which makes you wonder: Greatest “MNF” QB in the modern era? Lamar’s definitely got a case. https://t.co/M5zj6DFF85
— Jonas Shaffer (@jonas_shaffer) October 22, 2024
That’s quite the resume. I can’t remember ever seeing Jackson play more complete football, whether through the air, on the ground, or simply protecting the ball. If Jackson continues to play at this level, it’s hard to see anyone stopping Baltimore’s offense.
I’ve left less time for the defense today, but I’ll leave you with some food for thought. How would you feel about a reunion with veteran DE Za’Darius Smith?

If it came down to choosing between Smith or Kupp, who would you rather see in Charm City? Sound off in the comments!
