Authors' 2025 Plans: Julia Phillips on Witchcraft History

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

I’m interviewing authors on what books they have coming out this year and their other plans. Here I talk to Dr Julia Phillips about her scholarly history book on evidence of witchcraft in the 19th century, which I’m very much looking forward to reading:

Q: What book have you got coming out next in 2025?

A: The Persistence of Witchcraft in Victorian England

Q: What’s it about?

A: How witchcraft continued to be a presence and evolve in the 19th century.

Q: When will it be published?

A: The date’s still to be finalised by the publisher, Routledge.

Q: What event or events are you planning around the launch?

A: This is still to be arranged, but hopefully will include events at both Treadwell’s and Atlantis bookshops in London.

Q: Apart from your book, what are you currently working on?

A: Here are some of the events I’m doing:

  • A series of talks entitled ’The History and Endurance of Witchcraft’ (in person, livestream, and video catchup).
  • An online course about witchcraft – I am taking the session ‘20th century to the modern day.’
  • Courses in Hermetic Magic for Treadwell’s.
  • Talks for various organisations on subjects related to witchcraft and magic, including the Theosophical Society, U3A, Probus, WI.

Q: Is there anything else you would like to mention, including any of your previous books?

A: My previous books are out of print, but I have a chapter in Essays on Women in Western Esotericism: Beyond Seeresses and Sea Priestesses (Madeline Montalban: Magus of the Morning Star), published by Palgrave Macmillan, and A Century of James Frazer’s The Golden Bough : Shaking the Tree, Breaking the Bough, (James Frazer and the Press), published by Routledge.
