How slowpoke drepanosaurs split from speedy tiny tanystropheids

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Both were derived from Palaegama,
(Fig 1) a long-legged,?30-cm basal lepidosaur from the Late Permian.

Huehuecuetzpalli (Fig 1) led the speedy clade.
Jesariosaurus (Fig 1) led the slow clade.
Note the differences in limb length vs torso length already in place.

Figure 1. The drepanosaur-tiny tanystropheid split illustrated to scale. Palaegama is the last common ancestor. Deep chevrons mark drepanosaurs. Reduced to absent chevrons + sternal complex + long hind limbs + extradermal membranes mark fenestrasaurs, a clade of tiny tanystropheids..

Speedy tiny tanystropheids
evolved to become show-offs, developing various extra dermal membranes including oversize dorsal frills.

Then some {= fenestrasaurs] started flapping from locking down and elongating the coracoid.
Then some [= pterosaurs] started flying by elongating the fourth finger.

Slowpoke drepanosaurs
evolved to become even slower. Some anchored themselves to tree branches (Fig 1), perhaps becoming immobile, perhaps hoping to be invisible.

That’s the opposite of the speedy show-off clade. Keep that in mind.

Figure 2. Mirasaura, a speedy fenestrasaur, not a slow drepanosaur.

In 2025 Spiekman et al reported
that the exotically frilled show-offs Mirasaura (Fig 2) and Longisquama (Fig 1) were slow-moving drepanosaurs.

That doesn’t make sense given the above trends.

Treat Spiekman et al kindly. Scientists are allowed to make mistakes. That’s the scientific method. However, after awhile they should acknowledge those mistakes and correct them.
Still waiting for that to happen.
