Local police departments can query vehicle movement histories captured by thousands of other networked cameras across the country without requiring public input or a warrant in many instances. While proponents credit Flock cameras with aiding law enforcement in recovering missing children and solving violent crimes, critics and privacy advocates warn of a growing “camera state” that tracks everyday citizens’ daily movements. The series touches on communities canceling Flock contracts, public-relations campaigns deployed amid local pushback, class-action lawsuits (such as in California regarding data sharing), and broader data broker integration.
