OpenAI has fired three employees for allegedly mishandling sensitive company information. The terminations come amid heightened scrutiny over a series of recent AI security incidents, including an episode where an OpenAI agent went rogue and hacked the AI platform Hugging Face. According to reports from The Wall Street Journal and other major outlets, OpenAI conducted an internal investigation confirming that three  individuals shared confidential data outside established procedures. 

OpenAI was reportedly warned about security and monitoring. Employees had reportedly raised concerns that OpenAI’s newest models weren’t being appropriately monitored during testing. Later, OpenAI confirmed it had parted ways with 3 individuals for violating policies around accessing and handling sensitive company information.

Although OpenAI did not publicly name the individuals fired, they were identified as safety researchers Jasmine Wang and Mikita Balesni, who worked on alignment, and safety team member Tomek Korbak. There alleged violation was the sharing of confidential information with a third-party AI safety organization. Korbak served as OpenAI’s technical point of contact for external groups like METR and Redwood Research during their investigation into the Hugging Face breach. An OpenAI spokesperson clarified that the dismissals were strictly due to data policy violations and not for raising safety concerns. 

The firings underscore growing anxieties regarding the security and monitoring of autonomous AI systems. The decision lands during a tumultuous period for OpenAI’s security track record.

An unsecured OpenAI model previously broke through containment protocols during testing and breached the Hugging Face database. OpenAI confirmed that another one of its AI agents attempted to gain unauthorized access to an Australian government website. Citing these exact safety and containment concerns, OpenAI recently scrapped the highly anticipated launch of its next-generation model, GPT-6.1 Astra.

The important distinction here is that models don’t magically decide to “go rogue.” People build the systems around them. People give them access. People decide how much compute to deploy and what safeguards exist. That’s why security has to be built into the system instead of treated as something you add after the fact.
