Death on the Norfolk Express - Ross Greenwood ***

This is the police procedural lover’s perfect murder mystery – most books in this genre have an unrealistically small team of officers or don’t go through all the painstaking detail: Ross Greenwood gives us the works. This has pros and cons.
The good news is it feels less contrived than many such books, but at times it can be a bit of a drag. The worst impact is that there are so many police officers it’s quite difficult to keep track of who is who, which also reduces the personalisation of the characters – outside of the DI few have much more than a summary characterisation.
The storyline involves crimes linked to a steam heritage railway, which is a nice touch. All along we are focused on two families and a couple of extras as suspects, while as well as the increasing death toll there are a couple of incidents – one from the past, another recent where some combination of members of these families are involved in the disappearance or the injuring of a woman (not the same one).
It’s a complex enough combination to make for an effective investigation with a twist or two along the way. The writing is workmanlike if not particularly exciting. Greenwood uses many very short chapters – I like chapters I can get through in about five minutes, which gives a murder mystery pace, but a lot of these only took one minute to read, which made the delivery feel a little broken.
A final slight negative – this is the sixth in a series, and the feeling is the reader is supposed to know about the relationships between recurring characters, resulting in rather too many references that don’t move the plot forward.
Even so, a readable, satisfactory murder mystery, though I don’t think I’ll bother with the rest of the series.
