Patagonian Titanosaur Eggs Reveal a Polar Nesting Secret
A titanosaur eggshell collection from southern Patagonia demonstrates that some of the largest vertebrates to walk the Earth were capable of reproduction far from the equator. The 255 remnants were uncovered north of El Calafate in Argentina, approximately 68 million years ago, and constitute the most definitive dinosaur egg remains found in the southern hemisphere. According to the newly published study by The Royal Society Open Science, the microscopic pores in the eggshells provide evidence of how the giant dinosaurs could keep their offspring warm.
Eggshells at the End of the World
The collection of the egg fragments took place during research campaigns in 2020 and 2024, at the site of the Magallanodon located within the Chorrillo Formation, in Santa Cruz Province. During the Late Cretaceous, this riverine area was situated at an approximate latitude of 55 to 60 degrees south, a latitude characterized by milder climate but with long periods of absence of sunlight. The shells turned out to belong to a type of fossilized egg called Fusioolithus and were probably produced by titanosaurs, however no complete egg or embryo was found. The discovery complements evidence that dinosaur eggshells can preserve their own geological clock.
