Ornate Bronze Age Sword Discovery in Poland was Likely a Ritual Offering
A remarkably preserved bronze sword dating back around 2,700 years has been unearthed in a forest near Gdańsk, Poland. The find offers archaeologists a rare opportunity to investigate how prestigious weapons were deposited during the Late Bronze Age. The discovery is notable not only because of the weapon itself, but also because of the actions of the detectorist who found it.
Marcin Wiśniewski, a knowledgeable metal detectorist, chose to leave the sword in place and report it to the appropriate authorities. Due to this, the sword could be excavated professionally as part of a larger archaeological project with the surrounding archaeological sequence preserved.
The sword was found in a legal metal detecting survey in the Gdańsk Forest District, in an upright orientation, buried in fine sand. From its positioning, the weapon probably was deposited intentionally, and not lost by accident. Since there may have been more finds in the area of the sword, Wiśniewski concealed the location of the sword before reporting it to the Pomeranian Voivodeship Conservator of Monuments, the Gdańsk Forest District, and the local forestry agency.
