Hylomys, a ‘hairy hedgehog’, enters the LRT
Transitional between tree shrews
and hedgehogs (like Erinaceus) nests Hylomys, a gymnure, aka moonrat, aka hairy hedgehog. Transitional taxa are important even if they are not fancy.
So when you build your own LRT, don’t play favorites with the eye-catching famous taxa. In other words, don’t omit the small, brown, common and dull taxa.
Moonrats look like mice and rats,
but they are carnivores grading to omnivores. Those ‘double-rooted canines’ are homologs of canine-shaped premolars, as in their marsupial ancestors. These taxa are part of the large clade ‘Akynodonta’ recognized, at present, only by the large reptile tree (LRT, 2340 taxa).
Hylomys hainanensis
(Müller 1840; SE Asia, extant) resemble rodents in having slim bodies with long muzzles and slender limbs. They are derived from similarly sized and shaped tree shrews (Scandentia) like Tupaia and Ptilocercus. Five upper premolars are present. The lower canine (still present) is not sharp, but rounded.
