Inverbervie No 2 WMO003088 – A Rotor Radar Station

56.85199 -2.26504 Met Office CIMO Assessed Class 4 Archived temperature data from 1/2/1992

Tim Channon reviewed this site back in 2012 rating it as Class 3 based solely on enclosure paving marking it down from a Class 1 ranking. Tim did a very detailed review of enclosure paving based on the now defunct Llanbedr site. It is essential reading relative to sites such as Inverbervie and explains why this Met Office Class 4 rating for an otherwise open site is so appropriate.

The small town of Inverbervie lies about 20 miles south southwest of Aberdeen in an area known as The Mearns. The weather station itself is a few miles north of the town and is stationed at the Inverbie Rotor Radar Head.

The Inverbervie site is still a secure one with no public access despite having been offered for sale in the past. There does not appear to be any street view imagery from any of the nearby roads. This lack of streetview to former secure sites is quite common. In my own area of Kent, the long defunct RAF Ash still does not allow photography in the area with the streetview imagery omitted from near the entrance area as below with no blue line. It is worth noting that at Ash the site is now owned by “The Bunker Secure Hosting”

Inverbervie weather station appears to be alongside a Radar Plinth or possibly “Bunker” entrance point for the extensive underground secure area of this “Cold War” radar site. This is liable to all the heat retention of such dense concrete structures adversely affecting readings. From aerial images it looks like this just next to the parked vehicle which is presumably there on behalf of the Met Office.

There is, however, an area history site that has managed to reveal many facets and images of the site that is very well worth reading.

https://www.subbrit.org.uk/sites/inverbervie-rotor-radar-station/ there are multiple images available with the underground areas quite remarkable!

Inverbervie is not a site that should be included in the historic temperature record as it is unlikely to be fully reliable whatever the surface impression may give. It is very telling that Inverbervie is one of the chosen “Climate Averages” stations as are so many other military and aviation sites liable to distortion and unnatural factors.

Inverbervie is, however, a fascinating reminder of former times of military tension and the quite major lengths the military went to in security measures.
