Abstract

We present detailed analysis of an enhanced electron microscope image of lunar basaltic fragment B001, collected by China’s Chang’e 5 mission. Using Zeke-filter enhancement and 800% enlargement of the original image published in Science Advances, we identified numerous ultrastructural features that strongly resemble the cellular morphology of terrestrial wood. Red arrows indicate vessel element-like tubes; green arrows highlight elongated fiber-like structures; and yellow arrows denote circular and polygonal shapes suggestive of transverse cell sections. These microanatomical details argue against abiotic crystallization and suggest templated or biological origin of the observed structures.

Introduction

The Chang’e 5 lunar lander successfully returned high-resolution microscopic and electron microscope images of lunar materials, among them sample B001, a basaltic fragment sourced from Oceanus Procellarum. In the fifth image of the official Phys.org article covering the mission’s findings, we observe intricate patterns within B001 under secondary electron microscopy (SEM). Upon applying digital enhancement and magnification, these patterns reveal cellular geometries strikingly similar to fossilized xylem in terrestrial wood.

– Red arrows: Vessel element-like tubular voids, reminiscent of longitudinal conduits in terrestrial xylem.
– Green arrows: Wood fiber-like elongated and parallel structures, possibly analogs to sclerenchyma fibers.
– Yellow arrows: Cross-sectional outlines of circular or polygonal voids, resembling transverse views of wood cells.

Interpretation and Comparison with Terrestrial Wood

The structures observed in the SEM image demonstrate key diagnostic traits of secondary xylem tissue:

– Tubular Channels (Vessel Elements): Prominent elongated, cylindrical structures (red arrows) resemble the vessel elements responsible for water transport in angiosperm wood. Their regular spacing and uniform diameter (~10–30 µm, estimated from SEM scale) are consistent with biological vascular design.
– Parallel Fibers (Wood Fibers): Green-arrowed features align with longitudinal orientation, exhibiting size and tapering patterns similar to tracheids or wood fibers.
– Circular/Polygonal Cells (Transverse Cell Walls): Yellow arrows highlight rounded structures suggestive of transverse sections through vessel elements or fibers.

Figure 2. Cross-sectional Pattern of Suspected Wood Cells

Above figure is described in detais at

Image of a suspected cross-section of fossilized wood-like cells. AI recognition and human annotation suggest that the circular to polygonal voids are consistent with transverse sections of vessel elements and parenchyma cells. This image serves as a comparative context to the SEM morphology in Figure 1, supporting the hypothesis that multiple cell types are preserved in these lunar samples.Discussion

The SEM image of lunar sample B001 exhibits three tiers of structural complexity: longitudinal tubes, parallel fibers, and transverse cell outlines—all key features of xylem wood tissue. No known geological or mineralogical formation process on the Moon accounts for such regularity and hierarchy.

1. Lack of Geologic Analogs: Igneous crystallization cannot explain vascular-like tubes.
2. Size and Shape Consistency: Uniform diameters and repetition are hallmarks of templated biological systems.
3. Hierarchical Order: Suggests design or replication of terrestrial wood structure.
4. Impossibility of Lunar Flora: Strongly supports non-natural origin or prior biological templating.

Conclusion

The SEM and supporting images reveal wood cell-like structures in lunar sample B001. The combination of vessel-like tubes, fibers, and transverse outlines strongly points to artificial or bio-templated origin. This supports the hypothesis that the Moon may harbor remnants of engineered or fossilized biological structures.
