More Tasmanian devil ancestors back to the Early Cretaceous of South America

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

This post expands upon
an earlier (Feb ’25) post focused on Early Cretaceous Vincelestes and extant Sarcophilus, the Tasmanian devil. Now two more taxa join these two: Early Cretaceous Ambolestes and Eocene Ernanodon – which earlier nested with Vincelestes, then elsewhere, now back again.

The premaxilla of Ernandon
appears to be missing in large part based on phylogenetic bracketing – IF the phylogeny is correct. Here (Fig 2) missing parts are tentatively restored.

In particular
note the squamosal (magenta) shelf extending over the zygomatic arch = jugal + squamosal in both Ernanodon and Sarcophilus (Fig 2).

Creating a cladogram = family tree involves finding the best matches from a list of taxa that are more or less different from one another. So, similar, but different is both the process and challenge. All the other clades in the LRT were easier than the mammal clade. Work continues.

What I learn, especially when correcting errors, I share with you. This is how the scientific method works. Someone else will take this study to the next level over the next few decades. That person could be you.
