Genesis of the clades Glires, Diprotodontia and Odontoceti
Two late-surviving Early Miocene taxa,
Leptictis and Palaeothentis (Fig 1), demonstrate the evolution of the gnawing incisors that characterize the clade Glires.
Traditionally and academically Glires includes
only rodents, tree shrews and rabbits.

Figure 1. Asioryctes compared to Palaeothentes. Both are Early Miocene marsupials that give rise to independent placental clades.
In the LRT both of these marsupials
(Fig 1) ultimately gave rise to several independent placental clades.
Leptictis was basal to
pangolins, sengis, armadillos and anteaters on one branch – plus tenrecs, pakicetids, archaeocetids and odontocetes on the other branch. A long snout is found in most taxa.
Palaeothentes was basal to
marsupial kangaroos and wombats, then placental tree shrews, multis and rodents (including rabbits) in the large reptile tree (LRT, 2338 taxa). Gnawing teeth are found in most taxa.
Based on the appearance
of Early Jurassic multituberculate fossils, Leptictis and Palaeothentis radiated earlier.
This appears to be a novel hypothesis of interrelationships.
