Dinohyus and Archaeotherium: now closer to hippos than to pigs in the LRT
Dinohyus = Daedon = ‘dreadful teeth’
According to Wikipedia – Daeodon: “The exact relationships between Daeodon and other entelodonts are not well understood.”
According to Wikipedia – Entelodontidae: “is an extinct family of pig-like artiodactyls which inhabited the Northern Hemisphere from the late Eocene to the early Miocene, about 38-19 million years ago. Their large heads, low snouts, narrow gait, and proposed omnivorous diet inspires comparisons to suids (true pigs) and tayassuids (peccaries), and historically they have been considered closely related to these families purely on a morphological basis.”
“However, studies which combine morphological and genetic) data on artiodactyls instead suggest that entelodonts are more closely related to hippos and cetaceans through their resemblance to Pakicetus, than to basal pigs like Kubanochoerus and other ungulates.”
That’s where the LRT nested two tested entelodonts, Dinohyus and Archaeotherium (Fig 1), along with other hippos and mysticete ancestors on a morphological basis after recent housekeeping.
The giant tenrec, Pakicetus is an unrelated odontocete ancestor, with no resemblance to pigs or entelodonts. If there is a resemblance, the LRT does not ‘see’ it.

Recent housekeeping in the LRT
just moved hippos and mysiticetes away from pigs + camels + deer and closer to the heavy condylarths that give rise to oreodonts, hippos, entelodonts. desmostylians and mysticetes.
That’s a fragile recovery, just an example of the sort of convergence the LRT indicates a need for more independent testing with a similar taxon list = the scientific method.
