Sea cows and their ancestors back to sabertooths
As I said earlier, no one saw this coming.
Even so, this novel hypothesis of interrelationships is presented here and now in order for others to run their own analyses to confirm, refute or modify what the large reptile tree (LRT, 2320, subset Fig 2) recovers in the ancestry of sea cows.
I was not expecting this. But it works.
Sometimes discovery just announces itself like this, out of the blue.
Figure 1. Sea cows and their LRT ancestors to scale, presented as skeletons.

This time
skeletons are presented to scale of the relevant taxa in the unanticipated ancestry of sea cows. An earlier post brought the skulls of these taxa into focus, noting that the long canine was replaced with a long incisor during the course of evolution to Moeritherium (Fig 1), then this incisor tusk also shrank in sea cows, only to lengthen in elephants.
Figure 2. Subset of the LRT focusing on elephant ancestors, including canids for the first time.

As always, don’t trust these results.
Test these results with your own characters and a similar taxon list. This clade (Fig 1) is not similar to Tethytheria at its base. The LRT tests all candidate taxa. Please report any relevant omissions.
