Pomatomus relatives updated
The traditionally intractable fish phylogeny problem
is still coming together…slowly… in the LRT. Here are the latest related taxa (Fig 1) in the fish subset. These taxa are close to the extant bluefish, Pomatomus.

Pomatomus saltatrix
(Linneaus 1766; up to 60cm) is the extant bluefish and basal to flatfish in the LRT. Note the lack of circumorbital bones in the Gregory 1933 drawing (Fig 2). That ring is preserved in the skull photo (Fig 2), so it was added to the diagram.
