Earth Science, Systems and Society: a new journal from GSL

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The Geological Society of London (GSL) is proud to announce the launch of our first fully open access journal, Earth Science, Systems and Society (ES3), for 2021.

ES3 will publish timely and topical research of high importance across the breadth of the geosciences with a particular emphasis on interdisciplinary geoscience and the pivotal role it plays in a sustainable society. With this aim in mind, the journal will apply strong editorial control and manuscripts will be subject to the highest quality peer review process.

“The launch of ES3 is an exciting development for GSL and the communities we serve. In addition to a broad scope and high editorial standards, the journal’s mission will also focus on encouraging inclusivity and diversity in publishing, engaging directly with early career researchers, embodying principles of openness and transparency in science, and presenting a forward-looking perspective on geoscience and related disciplines. We look forward to engaging with those researchers who have contributed to GSL publications previously as well as welcoming new contributors” – David Boyt, Head of Editorial Development, GSL.

An early priority for the team at GSL will be the appointment of a Chief Editor for ES3 (see below).

ES3 is wholly owned by the Geological Society of London and will be published by GSL’s Publishing House in collaboration with Frontiers Media.

In the build-up to opening for submissions – planned for January 2021 – more information about ES3 will be shared via GSL updates and a dedicated website (currently under construction).

For any queries about ES3, please contact GSL’s Head of Editorial Development, David Boyt (david.boyt@geolsoc.org.uk).

Call for applications: Chief Editor of ES3

GSL is now welcoming applications of interest for the role of Chief Editor for ES3.

The Chief Editor will be responsible for overseeing all editorial aspects of ES3 and, in collaboration with GSL, setting the strategic direction for the journal. As a new journal, an early priority will be in establishing ES3 with a strong and inclusive profile across the geoscience communities that it will serve.

The Chief Editor will be enthusiastic about the subject scope, the editorial values and aspirations for the journal, and come with a vision for how to implement these as part of an ambitious and forward-thinking programme for publishing.

Ideally, the Chief Editor will have previous experience of a lead editorial role, be active in the community and proactive in mobilising an international network in support of the journal.

An annual travel stipend will be available to support attendance at conferences and events for journal advocacy and development work.

ES3 is a global journal and applicants do not need to be based in the UK or GSL Fellows, but they should be willing to become a Fellow if successfully appointed to the role.

To apply, please email your CV + a covering letter to the Head of Editorial Development: David Boyt (david.boyt@geolsoc.org.uk) by 11 September 2020 .
