A Friend Who Can…His Name is Jesus — Via the Wayfaring Gal (5/18/2025)

John 15:14-15:

Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you. (John 15:14)
Henceforth I call you not servants; for the servant knoweth not what his lord doeth: but I have called you friends; for all things that I have heard of my Father I have made known unto you. (John 15:15)

I haven’t had many friends in my life, even before I became a Christian. I lost my very best childhood friend suddenly and violently when she took her own life. I was only fourteen-years-old and “Susie” had just turned sixteen. I never got that close to anyone again.

I was very hurt and angry at her for leaving me that way. In the beginning, I resented her for what she did, by leaving me here alone in this world. Maybe that was the first indication of my unregenerate condition; my conditional phileo love, always wanting something in return. I will love you, but only IF…

So hard to believe that it was almost sixty years ago. I remember that day as though it just happened. Both of our lives were spiraling out of control and I guess it was more than she could bear.

I think of her often and pray that somehow the Lord had mercy on her. She really was a “good” person for someone so young—and a straight-A student as well—but I know what the Bible says:

Rom 3:10-12:

As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: (Rom 3:10)
There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. (Rom 3:11)
They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. (Rom 3:12)

Even as a Christian these past twenty-six years, I have few “friends;” which is to be expected I suppose. When one starts walking the Narrow Way, very few people are interested in what that journey is all about.

That would explain why Jesus said few would enter in at the Strait Gate and take the road less traveled; the Narrow Way which leadeth unto life…

Matt 7:13-14:

Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: (Matt 7:13)
Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. (Matt 7:14)

A study on Matthew 7:13-14 is very interesting, especially when looking at the words “strait“, “narrow“, “way“, and “leadeth“:

Strait: Strong’s Number G4728
στενός
stenos
sten-os’
Probably from the base of G2476; narrow (from obstacles standing close about):—strait.

Narrow: Strong’s Number G2346
θλίβω
thlibō
thlee’-bo
Akin to the base of G5147; to crowd (literally or figuratively):—afflict, narrow, throng, suffer tribulation, trouble.

Way: Strong’s Number G3598
ὁδός
hodos
hod-os’
Apparently a primary word; a road; by implication a progress (the route, act or distance); figuratively a mode or means:—journey, (high-) way.

Leadeth: Strong’s Number G520
ἀπάγω
apagō
ap-ag’-o
From G575 and G71; to take off (in various senses):—bring, carry away, lead (away), put to death, take away.

None of these descriptors sound anything like an easy or instant “sinner’s prayer,” or an “altar call,” as the modern day false teachers and preachers would have us believe. I guess it’s really no wonder that the Bible tells us that few will actually obey the commands of Jesus to enter in.

Remember too, that Jesus said everything he spoke of was of the spirit. He wasn’t saying we had to physically die.

It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life. (John 6:63)

One of the things I have learned about Jesus Christ and God the Father is that they are faithful and true. They will never forsake you, and the Holy Spirit will always be there to guide you unto all the truth; like no earthly friend would, or could, ever do.

But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (John 14:26)

One of the reasons the song below, “Friend Who Can“, appealed to me is that I know that without the Lord, I can do nothing; but with Him, I can do all things because He strengthens me.

I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me. (Phil 4:13)

But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. (1Pet 5:10)

Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; (John 8:31)
And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. (John 8:32)

If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed. (John 8:36)

Jesus told us that the true way of salvation is not an easy journey. This is why there are so many verses in the Bible referencing patience and endurance:

In your patience possess ye your souls. (Luke 21:19)

Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. (Jas 1:3)
But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. (Jas 1:4)

But he that shall endure unto the end, the same shall be saved. (Matt 24:13)

And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise. (Heb 6:15)

Friend Who Can | Thomas Mac | Lyrics:

Lyrics

Friend Who Can

I can’t take your broken heart
And mend all of the shattered parts
I can’t help you find the strength to stand
But I got a Friend who can

I can’t calm the raging seas
And walk the waves of Galilee
I can’t reach out with a saving hand
But I got a Friend who can

He is Love, He is Hope
He is all that you’re feeling
Inside when the night breaks you down
He is Healing
I can’t offer you a perfect plan
But I got a Friend who can

I can’t make a blind man see
No, I can’t give you all the strength you need
I can’t wash away your sin like sand
But I got a Friend who can

I can’t take a wandering soul
Lost on a broken road
And lead him to the Promised Land
But I got a Friend who can

He is Love, He is Hope
He is all that you’re feeling
Inside when the night breaks you down
He is Healing

I can’t offer you a perfect plan
But I got a Friend who can

He is Love, He is Hope
He is all that you’re feeling
Inside when the night breaks you down
He is Healing

I can’t offer you a perfect plan
But I got a Friend who can

I can’t offer you a second chance
But I got a Friend who can

Luke 11:5-9:

And he said unto them, Which of you shall have a friend, and shall go unto him at midnight, and say unto him, Friend, lend me three loaves; (Luke 11:5)
For a friend of mine in his journey is come to me, and I have nothing to set before him? (Luke 11:6)
And he from within shall answer and say, Trouble me not: the door is now shut, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot rise and give thee. (Luke 11:7)
I say unto you, Though he will not rise and give him, because he is his friend, yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as many as he needeth. (Luke 11:8)
And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. (Luke 11:9)

Never give up on the search for Jesus once you start, because you will never have a better Friend.

And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. (Jer 29:13)

Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
