California is getting hit with rain totals much higher than forecast and it is causing mudslides and flooding which is causing havok and closures on roads and major highways.

Rescuers are searching for people missing in California’s Santa Barbara County after deadly mudslides engulfed homes and covered roads. Rivers of mud caused by heavy rain Tuesday, ran down from Santa Barbara hillsides into the town of Montecito.

Flooding and demolishing homes and blocking the residents’ way out. Fifteen people were reported dead Wednesday with many more missing. Hundreds of people remain trapped by debris and mud-covered roads.

More than 100 homes have been destroyed as families searched for relatives.

Rescuers are frantically combing for survivors after rivers of mud and boulders crushed homes in and near the affluent oceanside community of Montecito on Tuesday, killing at least 17 people, weeks after a massive fire charred the area last month.

As anxious residents await word on their loved ones, Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said the priority is on finding survivors.

“Right now, our assets are focused on determining if anyone is still alive in any of those structures that have been damaged,” Brown told CNN affiliate KCAL on Wednesday.

Rescue workers are using helicopters in a search hampered by blocked roads, and downed trees and power lines.
